Job Description

School Psychologist – Exceptional Learners Division, Lynchburg, Virginia

Position Summary
  • To provide psychological services within the school division in accordance with the policies of the School Board.
Essential Functions
  • Consult with central office staff, school-based staff, parents, and other appropriate persons and agencies to increase their understanding of referred students and assist in making recommendations for their optimal growth.
  • Conduct in‑services, workshops or consultative conferences for central office and/or school-based personnel, and as appropriate for parents and public or private agencies.
  • Assist in providing liaison services between the school division and community agencies such as the mental health clinic, social services, family court, and others that provide special services for children and families.
  • Conduct research to acquire information that will assist in enhancing psychological services and the educational process.
  • Participate in legal appeals and hearings regarding students who have been evaluated psychologically or are in special education programs.
  • Administer and interpret individual psychological and psycho‑educational testing for referred students, assessing intelligence, personality, aptitude, achievement, and perception as appropriate.
  • Provide crisis and non‑crisis interventions including consultation, individual and group counseling and assistance in developing behavioral programs.
  • Participate in school‑based or division‑wide committees or meetings to exchange information that contributes to the enhancement of the educational process and awareness of specific children's needs.
  • Participate in school‑based School Consultation Team meetings upon request from the building administrator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Exceptional Learners.

Education and Experience
  • Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Health Board License as a School Psychologist.

  • Interpret and communicate the results of individual assessments and recommendations through written reports to central office staff, principals, teachers, parents, and agencies as required by policy and/or law.
Supervisory Responsibility
  • This is an 11‑month contract position with full benefits. The job description does not imply that these are the only duties to be performed; additional duties may be assigned by the Director of Exceptional Learners. Travel Requirements
  • Travel is required between school sites.
