The Heavy Equipment Hauler position is responsible for the pick-up and delivery of heavy construction equipment at customer sites and other job locations in a manner that reflects the University’s vision of working as “One Professional Team.” This position is responsible for maintaining proper paperwork and ensuring a professional appearance with all vehicles/equipment, in addition to being accountable for basic operational instruction to customers on the safe operation of all equipment and hauling larger loads for special projects when a CDL class dump truck is required and required to be in a CDL class A dump with plow and spreader during snow emergency.
Coordinating delivery and pick-up schedules and verifying repairs. May be required to respond to emergency calls as needed for the best interest of the University. This position involves driving and managing deliveries and ensuring compliance with all safety regulations.
- Determining the total weight & size requirements, gross combination weight, axel loading, components, and load size.
- Delivering, loading & unloading a variety of equipment and handling equipment and cargo safely while meeting rigging requirements, securing designated loading zones, and confirming accessible delivery locations (e.g., flatbeds, tankers, or multi-axle trucks).
- Deliver equipment/vehicles to vendors for repair as needed.
- Ensure timely deliveries, managing tight schedules while maintaining high customer service standards.
- Planning your route, terrain type, road condition, and permit acquisition if required.
- Hauling larger loads for special projects when a larger CDL class dump truck is required.
- Required to be in a CDL class dump with plow and spreader during snow emergency.
- Coordinate with University personnel.
- Inspects mechanical, electrical, and other defects on university equipment.
- Inspect hydraulic systems on multiple types of equipment and vehicles.
- Maintain records of accurate logs of driving hours, fuel consumption, and vehicle conditions, including repairs made, work orders, and time worked through departmentally approved means.
- Report any unsafe conditions regarding the use of equipment and conduct daily pre-op and post-trip vehicle inspections as required.
- Report any accidents, delays, or issues immediately to management.
- Ensure the entire vehicle is clean and meets professional standards and is ready for the next day’s business, including fuel fills and pre-loads when possible.
- Routinely deliver repaired equipment from Transportation to assigned department.
- Transport equipment using proper tie-down methods that meet DOT standards.
- Coordinate with departments on locations for drop-offs, pickups, and time frames.
- Respond to emergency needs of the University.
- Inspect all equipment for damage at the time of pick up and document findings for the construction equipment manager upon return to the shop.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles to ensure safety compliance and report any issues promptly.
- Maintain vehicles and equipment to ensure safe conditions, including daily inspections of tires, lights, signals, glass, etc. Check vehicle fluids and tire air pressures daily.
- Adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations regarding transportation and safety.
- Follow departmental approved method of documentation and communicate service and repair problems and procedures with the operator and Manager.
- Meet the criteria to receive a university p card and comply with DOT Federal Motor Carrier regulations.

- Be able to move 53’ trailers with the Road Tractor as needed.

Education and Experience
- High School Diploma with at least 10 years of job-related experience in equipment hauling, preventative maintenance, and semi-skilled experience in the service and repair of equipment.
- 5+ years of lift, small equipment, and heavy equipment operation.
- Continuing Education and Certifications are a plus.
- Must have decent computer skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Office preferred.
