The Transit Dispatcher is responsible for performing public transportation scheduling, routing, and dispatching duties; operates a variety of communication equipment, including two‑way radio, telephone, computer mobile dispatch terminal and scheduling systems; creates, maintains, and monitors computerized driver manifests/schedules; and responds to requests for service and provides a variety of information to passengers and the general public.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Report to work at the required time and perform duties assigned by the Director of Transit Dept. or Sr. VP of Facilities Management.
- Familiarize with standard concepts, practices, and procedures of the Transit Department.
- Provide public transportation dispatching and routing services to seniors, disabled individuals certified under the ADA, and the general public.
- Dispatch fixed route vehicles as appropriate.
- Create, maintain, and monitor computerized daily schedules for dispatching and routing transit services; modify and update schedules to improve services.
- Maintain an up‑to‑date listing of buses and drivers.
- Ensure that a current route sheet is available for each scheduled route.
- Maintain an accurate daily roster of drivers and assigned buses.
- Maintain a cordial working relationship with drivers and supervisors.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of all routes.
- Ensure that proper procedure is followed by all drivers for bus key and clipboard check‑out and check‑in.
- Operate two‑way radio in dispatch office in accordance with SOPs.
- Maintain accurate records of post‑trip forms turned in by drivers, ensuring forms are properly filled before release.
- Maintain a check on Ride Systems, ensuring proper updates and that all units operate on schedule.
- Perform clerical duties: answer multi‑line phone, receive and sort mail, data entry and typing; maintain accurate records, logs and files on transit and paratransit services; create monthly reports.
- Provide quality customer service and respond to public inquiries and requests for service in a courteous manner.
- Use experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Be available for school closings, delays, shutdowns, and emergencies, including weather‑related events.
- Perform snow removal activities as assigned (shoveling, salting, etc.).
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum 1+ year related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in the Transit organization.
- Must understand and follow instructions and work under limited supervision.
- Must work well with the public and co‑workers, present a positive attitude.
- Exceptional self‑management, strong organizational and planning skills, and well‑developed communication skills.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and excellent computer skills a plus.
- Must be able to lift 50+ pounds.
- Must have a valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and Air Brake endorsement; acceptable DMV record and liability insurance required.
- Work will be performed in a typical Virginia climate.
- Facility Management Division employees must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment: protective eyewear, ear protection, hard hat, gloves, slip‑resistant/steel‑toed shoes, respirators/masks, reflective safety vests, and sunscreen.
- Certifications obtained while employed will be reimbursed by the university upon voluntary termination for the first 12 months after acquisition.
- Effective communication both verbally and in writing; able to convey clear, well‑articulated information.
- Experience driving buses on fixed routes.
- Remain calm under stressful situations; work well with the public and co‑workers.
- Strong organizational, planning, and problem‑solving skills.
- Understand, speak, and write English for professional communication.
- Strong public communication skills for representing Liberty University to business and community customers.
- Excellent computer skills.
- Ability to lift 50+ pounds and perform duties in typical Virginia climate.
