The On-Demand Ride (ODR) Driver is responsible for transporting Faculty, Staff, and Students to, from, on and off campus locations. The driver must operate vehicles safely under various conditions and support other departments during the summer season when transit demand is low.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • As essential personnel, the driver must be available during school closings, delays, shutdowns, emergencies including severe weather incidents, and perform snow removal activities such as shoveling and salting. The driver must be available for scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise.
  • Report to work at the required time and perform duties as assigned by the Director of the Transit Department.
  • Familiar with the standard concepts, practices, and procedures of the Transit Department.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while completing the job duties, including protective eyewear, ear protection, hard hat, gloves, slip‑resistant/steel‑toed boots, respirators/masks, reflective safety vests, and sunscreen.
  • Follow established safety driving procedures and techniques to perform and complete assigned bus routes, ensuring safety for all passengers.
  • Perform basic vehicle maintenance such as checking tires, oil, and lights to ensure the vehicle is in good working order, clean and presentable at the start of each shift.
  • Operate an iPad with the On‑Demand Ride pick‑up system.
  • Answer calls from a two‑way radio.
  • Pick up and drop off passengers at designated locations.
  • Follow a planned route according to a time schedule.
  • Assist passengers with disabilities to get on and off the bus.
  • Pick up and secure ADA passenger belongings such as wheelchairs and scooters.
  • Obey traffic laws and state and federal transit regulations.
  • Interact with passengers in a professional, courteous, and helpful manner.
  • Keep passengers informed of possible delays.
  • Answer questions about schedules, routes, and transfer points.
  • Respond calmly and timely in stressful situations, and continue to operate the bus calmly.
  • Report accidents or traffic disruptions to a central dispatcher and follow directions when using an alternate route.
  • Use experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Remain abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services, and industry benchmarks.

  • Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies
    • Must be at least 21 years old.
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a minimum of five years documented driving history and maintain an acceptable driving record.
    • Position requires a high school diploma or GED.
    • Minimum one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in the transit bus driving field.
    • Certifications obtained while employed by Liberty University at the expense of the employer will be reimbursed back to the University upon voluntary termination (resignation) within the first 12 months after acquiring it.
    • Must be detail‑oriented, possess strong organizational skills, and well‑developed communication skills.
