Street Maintenance Team Member
The Streets Division of the Public Works Department is seeking qualified candidates who enjoy working outdoors in a fast-paced environment and want to be part of the Street Maintenance Team. Primary duties include asphalt maintenance, leaf collection, snow removal & emergency response. Construction experience preferred. This position is full-time and offers a competitive benefit package (including medical, dental, life insurance, etc.),

Starting pay is $20.00 per hour, but compensation will be negotiated based on possession of a Commercial Driver's License and relevant street maintenance experience. Essential duties include the following:
- Operates various equipment, motorized and non motorized such as dump truck, loader, forklift, asphalt roller, tar distributor; air compressors, plate tamper and jack hammer while performing routine repair, maintenance and construction on city streets
- Loads and unloads gravel, dirt, timber, chemicals, tools, equipment and other materials;
- Performs basic repair and preventive maintenance on equipment;
- Manually spreads asphalt, gravel and other materials;
- Performs leaf collection operating a variety of equipment;
- Cleans curbs, gutters and ditches;
- Assists in work zone traffic control set up;
- Directs traffic at construction sites as a certified flagger;
- Performs litter collection;
- Works in snow removal operation as assigned;
- Uses blue prints, maps & manuals to perform work; interprets written & oral instructions;
- Completes necessary documentation such as work orders & logs;
- Performs routine calculations relative to street maintenance;
- Follows all safety precautions;
- Participates in training;
- Communicates effectively and courteously with customers, peers and others;
- Actively participates in team activities such as problem solving & planning;
- Works various schedules as assigned;
- Performs other duties as necessary.
Additional duties may include:
- Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
- When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.
Minimum education and experience required:
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
- Street Maintenance Experience Preferred
Additional requirements:
- Possession of valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and an acceptable driving record based on City criteria
- Must hold a valid license for at least 3 years
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License Learner's permit in 45 days of employment;
- Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License within 90 days of employment;
- Ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within 6 months
- Ability to obtain a Flagging Certificate;
- Relevant background checks including criminal background checks must be completed and approved;
- Pre-employment physical, drug and alcohol screening.
