Summary/Objective
Perform general accounting functions for Housing Assistance Corporation (HAC) as assigned by the Controller. The Staff Accountant supports the Finance department and the organization as a whole through core accounting operations, payroll and benefits support, and special projects requiring sound accounting judgment and attention to detail.
Duties and Responsibilities- Maintain and post general ledger activity, ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial records
- Prepare and review journal entries and supporting documentation
- Perform monthly account reconciliations, including bank accounts and balance sheet accounts
- Monitor and reconcile general ledger accounts, identifying and resolving discrepancies
- Support month-end and year-end close processes
- Assist with audit preparation, schedules, and external reporting requirements
- Manage cash activity, including preparation and posting of deposits
- Support accounts payable and accounts receivable functions as needed
- Assist with preparation of financial reports and internal reporting deliverables
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies, internal controls, and applicable regulations
- Support invoicing and grant or program-related financial tracking as assigned
- Provide backup support for Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and payroll functions
- Assist with benefits-related accounting and reconciliation activities
- Manage corporate credit card (VISA) activity and reconciliation
- Participate in cross-functional projects and finance-related initiatives
- Maintain organized and accurate financial and operational filing systems
- Support general accounting and administrative functions as needed
- Incorporate HAC’s Guiding Values into daily responsibilities and interactions

Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency with spreadsheets and computerized accounting systems (e.g., Sage or similar ERP systems)
- Working knowledge of accounting principles and practices
- Strong understanding of bookkeeping procedures and financial controls
- High attention to detail and accuracy in financial work
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to train and support staff on accounting-related processes
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software tools
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
- Minimum of 3–5 years of accounting or finance experience, preferably within a nonprofit or government-funded environment
- Experience with grants, compliance-based accounting, or restricted funding preferred
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
The functions of this role are conducted in an office and team environment.
Hours of WorkThis role is paid on a salaried basis.
Typically, full-time salaried employees work 35 hours during a Monday through Friday work week. However, this is a salaried position. Therefore, the individual is expected to work as required to complete the duties of the position. This may mean hours beyond 35 per week are required.
