Job DescriptionLead Teacher, Special Education, Substantially Separate Program (STRIVE) - KIPP Academy Lynn Elementary
The Special Education Sub-Separate Lead Teacher will instruct a small group of students in behavior skills training, play/social skills, activities of daily living (ADLs), and academic skills. The classroom is a multi-grade substantially separate classroom for students in grades K-4. Candidates should have experience in ABA, curriculum modification, Discrete Trial Teaching, and use of technology including AAC devices. The Lead Teacher collaborates with classroom teachers to support students during inclusion opportunities, and works with related service providers such as occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, and counselors.
The teacher is a case manager for a group of Special Education students, including writing and managing IEP paperwork and meetings, communicating with families about student progress, advocating for students as needed, and creating and managing accommodations and modifications for individual students.
This role is designed for flexible and creative teachers who are committed to serving high-need students and who seek to understand root causes of challenging behaviors and use positive supports to build social/emotional skills and independence. Prior experience with students who have moderate to severe disabilities and/or challenging behavior or social/emotional needs is preferred. Experience with Special Education laws and paperwork is beneficial but not required;
the district’s BCBA team provides training and support. Sub-Separate Lead Teachers are empowered to use their expertise to help students succeed.
Essential job functions and responsibilities include the following.
Responsibilities- Be the lead teacher and implement programming based on IEP goals (e.g., literacy, mathematics, ADLs, play/social skills, behavior skills) for a small group of students.
- Identify and implement individualized programming for students on caseload.
- Record and analyze data.
- Set specific, ambitious goals with all students and identify resources to meet them.
- Use best practices in special education to deliver engaging instruction that is rigorous and accessible.
- Collaborate on Functional Behavior Assessments (with BCBA guidance) as needed and work with BCBA and related service providers to generalize skills across settings.
- Ensure all students feel affirmed, valued, and challenged daily.
- Assist with MCAS Alt portfolios (for applicable students).
- Assist with managing and developing program-based support staff and deliver professional development as needed.
- Obtain required MTEL and SEI endorsements with financial support from KIPP MA within the first year of employment; preferred to obtain special education licensure when qualified.
- Design and refine the vision for student culture with school leaders.
- Ongoing progress monitoring of student progress toward goals.
- Lead the IEP process for all students in the classroom.
- Collaborate with BCBA and other team members to create and implement Behavior Support Plans.
- Participate in school-wide and individual professional development, including pre-service training over the summer and weekly during the academic year.
- Engage in ongoing coaching and feedback with a supervisor (meet 1x/1-2 weeks, incorporate feedback, co-planning, live coaching).
- Perform necessary support duties including coverage, bus, lunch, and dismissal duties.
- Develop strong relationships with families through school events and regular communication.
- Collaborate with school and content teams to address common challenges and implement grade-wide systems.

- Maintain dependable attendance according to the school calendar.
