Job Description

Primary Role: Lead teacher in a Sub‑Separate Special Education classroom, responsible for instructing a small group of students (1‑4) in core content areas (Math, Reading, Humanities, Science) and providing specialized support in all other classroom needs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Classroom Instruction: Lead instruction in up to four content areas or IEP‑based instruction, creating aligned lesson plans, unit plans, rubrics, and assessments.
  • Modify standards and grading scales to meet student needs, set ambitious goals, and use best practices for special education.
  • Infuse the school’s core values into lessons and school practices.
  • Complete Functional Behavior Assessments in collaboration with a BCBA and provide healing‑centered instruction.
  • Collaborate with psychologists to run trauma‑informed, social‑emotional, and life‑skills groups.
  • Execute MCAS Alternative portfolios for applicable students.
  • Ensure all students feel affirmed, valued, and challenged daily.

School & Professional Responsibilities:

  • Obtain required MTEL and SEI endorsements within the first year; preferred: special education licensure.
  • Provide secondary support in content areas when not leading the classroom.
  • Design, execute, and refine the vision for student culture with school leaders.
  • Monitor student progress toward academic and social‑emotional goals.
  • Lead the 504 and IEP process for all students in the classroom.
  • Collaborate with counselors, related service providers, and general‑education teachers to implement behavior support plans.
  • Participate in school‑wide and individual professional development.
  • Take ownership of personal growth, seeking feedback through coaching and co‑planning.
  • Perform support duties (coverage, bus, lunch, dismissal) as needed.
  • Build strong relationships with families through events and consistent communication.
  • Collaborate with grade‑level and content teams to tackle common challenges.
  • Maintain dependable attendance and professional conduct.

General Requirements & Responsibilities:

  • Act with integrity, humanity, self‑awareness, and critical consciousness as outlined by KIPP MA’s Code of Conduct.
  • Engage in community and regional professional development activities.
  • Apply data analysis skills to make informed decisions.
  • Maintain self‑management, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills to support student behaviors.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, families, and virtual platforms.
  • Possess physical mobility, strength, and manual dexterity needed for classroom and emergency tasks.
Qualifications
  • Deep alignment with KIPP MA’s mission and values.
  • 2+ years of full‑time teaching experience (special education experience preferred).
    Preferred:
    Special Education licensure.
  • Prior experience with special education laws and paperwork preferred but not required.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Computer literacy and baseline familiarity with Google Suite.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive student growth and create a warm, inclusive, rigorous learning environment.
Benefits

Salary range: $55,000 – $89,500 per year (1.0 FTE, 45 h/week) based on experience. Includes a $1,000 signing bonus and an annual $2,000 retention bonus after the first year, plus additional performance bonuses as eligible.
