Elementary Reading Specialist


* This is a long‑term substitute assignment beginning September 2026 through February 2027.

Lynn Public Schools is a vibrant seaside urban community located just north of Boston. Reading Specialists work extensively with students to improve specific reading skills, focusing on the five components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. They provide leadership, coordination, collaboration, and innovation in reading instruction, possess knowledge of child growth and development, especially regarding characteristics of students/children in the assigned age group, and are aware of current trends, research, and best practices related to reading instruction.

Qualifications
  • Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education license in Reading Specialist, All Levels.
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university;
    Master’s Degree preferred.
  • SEI Endorsement.
  • Strong district lens regarding EL, curriculum, and equity.
  • Knowledge of current education legislation and regulations.
  • Ability to work effectively with teachers, support staff, parents, and to advocate for children to problem‑solve.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience in an urban district/setting preferred.
  • Ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Plan and implement standards‑based lesson plans with clear objectives.
  • Provide appropriate and effective learning experiences for students from diverse socio‑economic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies suitable for diverse learners.
  • Design and demonstrate differentiated instruction.
  • Use formal and informal assessments to measure progress toward mastery.
  • Analyze data and prescribe actions for improvement.
  • Create a motivating, safe, and supportive learning environment.
  • Adapt lessons for individual, small group, and remedial instruction.
  • Communicate orally and in writing with students, parents, and others.
  • Collaborate with teachers in planning instruction for a diverse learner population.
  • Model effective teaching strategies and techniques.
  • Participate in school‑wide professional development activities.
  • Attend monthly reading teacher Professional Learning Time meetings.
  • Perform duties as requested by principals.
  • Communicate high standards and expectations to all students.
Terms of Employment
  • As negotiated with the Lynn School Committee and Lynn Teachers Union.
  • 180 days per year.
