Job Description

Special Education Teacher SGL-K-2 – Small Group Learning. The educator is the primary instructional delivery person in the classroom. Student achievement and growth depend on the teacher’s work. The position is demanding, varied and complex. The teacher must build relationships, communicate effectively, and be well trained in content knowledge and teaching strategies.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree required;
    Master’s Degree preferred
  • Valid license from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in Moderate Disabilities (PreK-2, PreK-8, Severe Disabilities, All Levels)
  • SEI Endorsement
  • Additional content area licensure encouraged
  • Understanding of institutional and structural racism, bias, and impact on underserved communities
  • Knowledge of current education legislation/regulations
  • Ability to work effectively with teachers, support staff, and parents and advocate for children
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Experience in an urban district setting preferred
  • Ability to meet Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice
  • Experience with Emotionally Impaired/Intellectually impaired students highly desirable; willingness to attend “Positive Behavior Strategies for Emotionally Impaired Students”
Performance Responsibilities
  • Plan and assess curriculum and instruction.
  • Meet and instruct assigned students in designated locations and times.
  • Plan a program of study that meets individual needs, interests, and abilities.
  • Provide effective instruction and culturally responsive teaching.
  • Provide small‑group instruction to students with moderate to severe cognitive delays.
  • Write and implement IEP goals and provide progress reports.
  • Provide accommodations for student learning and testing.
  • Collaborate with school staff to respond to student needs.
  • Use innovative instructional strategies and technology.
  • Create a conducive classroom environment.
  • Promote high standards and expectations for achievement and behavior.
  • Guide learning toward curriculum standards and objective setting.
  • Implement district mission and instructional standards.
  • Assess and document student accomplishments regularly.
  • Seek assistance from district specialists as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records as required by law.
  • Assist administration in implementing policies and rules.
  • Develop classroom rules and procedures.
  • Be available to students and parents outside instructional day when required.
  • Maintain professional competence.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Establish cooperative relationships with colleagues.
  • Maintain communication with students, colleagues, and parents about progress.
  • Promote equity and diversity.
  • Maintain a safe, nurturing learning environment.
  • Engage families and community for equitable learning.
  • Utilize curricula reflecting diverse backgrounds.
  • Support students with disabilities in general education.
  • Support and differentiate learning for second language learners.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Terms of Employment
  • As negotiated with Lynn School Committee and Lynn Teachers Union.
  • 180 days per year.
