Total earnings for this position is $2,772 at $18 per hour plus room and board and transportation during the residential portion of the program.
About Trio Upward Bound ProgramThe North Shore Community College (NSCC) TRIO Upward Bound (UB) Program is a federally funded program for low‑income, first‑generation, and/or academically at‑risk high school students. The primary mission is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary schooling and enroll in, attend, and graduate from post‑secondary institutions. The UB program provides academic, co‑ and extracurricular activities during the academic year and the summer, including instruction, tutoring, college tours, cultural events, health and fitness activities, educational workshops, and service activities.
AboutUb Summer Academy
The UB Summer Academy is a six‑week program that simulates commuter and residential college experiences. The Summer Academy serves approximately 40 students from the Lynn Public Schools. This year’s Summer Academy includes a four‑week day program at North Shore Community College’s Lynn campus and a two‑week residential program at UMass Amherst. The program runs Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM during the non‑residential component and Sunday evening through Saturday afternoon during the residential component.
The overarching theme for this year’s Summer Academy is Starfleet Academy.
The four Academy Learning Leaders support the curricular, co‑, and extra‑curricular components of the UB Summer Academy.
Essential Functions General- Attend and participate in staff training, daily/weekly staff meetings, and end‑of‑program activities.
- Build and maintain a positive, supportive, productive, and safe environment for both students and staff.
- Assist with opening or closing the program each day, greeting students, monitoring activities, assisting students getting to/from class, announcements, and organizing program spaces and supplies via Zoom.
- Assist the Program Coordinator and Community Team Leaders with workshops.
- Develop announcements and organize program spaces and supplies for activities.
- Assist with monitoring student behavior for compliance with Upward Bound and college policies.
- Assist students getting to/from class (sending links, phone calls, text messages, reminders, etc.).
- Assist instructors with the preparation of class material and student reports.
- Serve as the tutor for assigned classes; work closely with instructors to provide interventions and support; provide academic support during office hours.
- Individually mentor and conduct weekly student group meetings for an assigned group of students.
- Serve as a role model for students during social and virtual activities.
- Assist with daily student curricular and co‑curricular activities and field trips as needed.
- Appropriately represent NSCC and UB at all events.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Shared responsibility for dormitory supervision of project participants.
- Assist with dining hall, floor duty, bell‑desk coverage, and monitoring residence hall floors.
- Assist with residence hall set‑up and clean‑up during and at the beginning and end of the program.
- Completion of at least one year of college and current enrollment in an undergraduate program.
- Knowledge of/experience with the Upward Bound program.
- Demonstrated high degree of creativity, energy, and enthusiasm.
- Demonstrated ability to be punctual and dependable.
- Demonstrated ability to act as a team player.
- Availability to complete mandatory staff training before the start of the summer component.
- Bi‑lingual (Spanish, French, Khmer) preferred.
- Previous residence life, advising, and/or tutoring experience preferred.
- Tutoring experience, particularly with low‑income and/or minority youth preferred.
