Physical Education Teacher

The YMCA is seeking an energetic, structured, and community-minded Physical Education Teacher to inspire a love for movement, teamwork, and healthy habits in elementary school students. This role is responsible for designing and delivering a dynamic PE curriculum for students in grades K-5.

Classes meet once per week per grade level, with the teaching schedule structured across three days (Tuesday through Thursday, teaching two grade levels per day). The ideal candidate will create a safe, inclusive, and fun environment that aligns with the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. An additional staff will co-teach to assist when behavior management and activity setup.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Development:
    Design, implement, and adapt a comprehensive physical education curriculum tailored specifically for grades K-5, ensuring age-appropriate skill development and maximum participation.
  • Instruction & Facilitation:
    Lead engaging, structured weekly PE classes for two specific grade levels each day, managing classroom behavior and keeping students active and motivated.
  • Safety &

    Risk Management:

    Maintain a safe instructional environment. Ensure all equipment is in good working order, properly set up, and safely stored after classes.
  • Inclusivity & Engagement:
    Structure activities so that students of all skill levels and backgrounds can participate, build confidence, and succeed.
  • YMCA Culture:
    Act as a positive role model, integrating the YMCA's core values into daily lessons and encouraging healthy lifestyle choices.

Qualifications

  • Education:

    High school diploma or equivalent required; degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Recreation, or Education preferred.
  • Experience:

    Minimum of 1–2 years of experience teaching or coaching youth sports/physical education, ideally within the K-5 age range.
  • Certifications:
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certifications (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire).
  • Ability to pass required state background checks and child abuse prevention training.
  • Skills:

    Strong classroom management skills, excellent communication, and physical stamina to actively demonstrate sports, games, and exercises.
