The Spanish Generalist is a teacher leader within the Dual Language Program who provides targeted Spanish literacy instruction and intervention to students while also supporting teachers in the implementation of high-quality biliteracy instruction. This role combines the responsibilities of a reading specialist and dual language educator to strengthen Spanish literacy outcomes, bilingualism, biliteracy, and culturally responsive instruction across the school community.

The Spanish Generalist works collaboratively with classroom teachers, interventionists, instructional leaders, and dual language teams to support the development of strong Spanish literacy practices aligned to dual language philosophy and research-based instructional approaches. The position includes direct service to students through small group instruction, intervention, assessment, and progress monitoring, while also building teacher capacity through co-planning, and professional development.

The Spanish Generalist must possess deep knowledge of Spanish literacy development, second language acquisition, culturally and linguistically sustaining practices, and dual language pedagogy.

Qualifications:

  • Valid license from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in Elementary Education
  • Bilingual Endorsement required
  • Bilingual fluency and high levels of academic literacy in both Spanish and English
  • Demonstrated understanding of dual language philosophy, biliteracy development, and second language acquisition
  • Experience supporting multilingual learners and students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • Strong knowledge of Spanish literacy instruction
  • Experience using literacy assessments and student data to inform instruction and intervention
  • Ability to model effective instructional practices for teachers in Spanish
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Experience in urban school settings preferred
  • Ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice
  • Master's Degree preferred
  • Willingness to participate in district and school-based dual language professional development

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct Spanish literacy instruction and intervention to individual students and small groups
  • Support the development of biliteracy skills through targeted instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Spanish
  • Administer literacy and language assessments and analyze student data to inform instruction and intervention planning
  • Monitor student progress and collaborate with teachers and instructional leaders to determine next instructional steps
  • Communicate high standards and expectations for all students
  • Model effective Spanish literacy and dual language instructional practices in classrooms
  • Support teachers in planning and implementing standards-based Spanish literacy instruction
  • Facilitate co-planning, co-teaching, and reflective instructional conversations with teachers
  • Assist in building consistency and alignment of Spanish literacy instruction across grade levels
