Definition
Under the supervision of the Senior Lifeguard, provide safety for persons using the swimming pool and related areas; aid persons in danger; and perform related work as required.

Work ScheduleNon‑benefited, part‑time at‑will position. Temporary/seasonal/part‑time employment does not qualify for City benefits, except for those required by law. Part‑time shifts may not exceed 28 hours per week, 125 hours a month, and 950 hours in a fiscal year basis. Candidates may be required to work irregular hours, various shifts, weekends, holidays and/or on‑call status.
Examples of DutiesPrevents accidents through enforcement of policies, rules and regulations; keeps attentive lookout for accidents; warns people against dangerous practices; enters the water to rescue people in distress; administers artificial respiration and first aid; assists with routine pool cleaning and maintenance; assists in supervising special swim events; may open the facility and supervise pool operations.
Qualifications- Knowledge of: Lifesaving methods and the application of first aid; policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using pool; methods and practices of pool cleaning and maintenance.
- Ability to: Rescue drowning swimmers and administer artificial respiration and first aid; supervise the conduct of pool patrons and maintain order; use life lines, rings and other safety equipment; perform routine cleaning and maintenance; follow written and oral directions; read and write at the required level.
- Requirements: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities. Typical way to obtain such knowledge includes:
- Education:
Junior or Senior class status in high school. - Experience:
One (1) year of experience as a pool or beach lifeguard. - Special Requirements: Possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Certificate, Standard First Aid certificate, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificates, submitted with employment application.
- Candidates under 18 years of age and enrolled in high school must obtain a valid work permit prior to employment.
The majority of work is performed indoors in a swimming pool. Work includes sitting, standing, walking, running on slippery and uneven surfaces, kneeling, crouching, twisting, climbing ladders, swimming, reaching, bending, crawling, pushing, pulling, dragging, grasping and lifting equipment up to 50 pounds. The incumbent must be able to react quickly to lifesaving emergencies and perform strenuous physical activity requiring strength and endurance.
Exposure to blood, bodily fluids, communicable diseases, pool water, chemicals, solvents, disinfectants, electrical and mechanical hazards may occur. The incumbent must meet the physical requirements with mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity appropriate to the duties.
This position is represented by Lynwood Employees' Association/AFSCME Local 1920 (LEA). Candidates requiring mandatory reenrollment in CALPERS will not be considered for part‑time employment with the City due to budgetary reasons.
