Position: Lifeguard (Part-TIme / At-Will)

ROLE SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Senior Lifeguard, provide safety for persons using the swimming pool and related areas; aid persons in danger; and perform related work as.

RECRUITMENT OVERVIEW

This recruitment establishes a qualified list for nine (9) vacancies within the Recreation and Community Services Department and will be merged with any current qualified lists that may already be active.

FILING DEADLINE

This recruitment is open until filled and may close at any time with or without notice. First screening of applications will take place on May 14, 2025 and second screening on June 04, 2025.

WORK SCHEDULE

This is a non‑benefited, part‑time at‑will position. Part‑time shifts may not exceed 28 hours per week, 125 hours per month, and 950 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30). Candidates may be required to work irregular hours, various shifts, weekends, holidays and/or on‑call. Hours are assigned at the discretion of the Recreation and Community Services Department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prevent accidents through enforcement of pool policies and regulations.
  • Keep an attentive lookout for accidents on the water, diving board or pool deck.
  • Warn people against dangerous practices regarding pool use.
  • Enter the water to rescue people in distress and administer artificial respiration and first aid.
  • Assist with routine pool cleaning and maintenance work as required.
  • Assist in supervising special swim events.
  • Open the facility and supervise pool operations when required.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
  • Lifesaving methods and first aid application.
  • Policies, rules and regulations governing pool safety.
  • Pool cleaning and maintenance practices.
ABILITY TO
  • Rescue drowning swimmers and administer first aid.
  • Supervise pool patrons and maintain order tactfully.
  • Use lifelines, rings and other safety equipment.
  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of the pool area.
  • Follow written and oral directions.
  • Read and write at the required level for job performance.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education: Junior or Senior high school status.

Experience: One (1) year of experience as a pool or beach lifeguard.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Current American Red Cross Water Safety Certificate.
  • Current American Red Cross Standard First Aid certificate.
  • Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer certificate.
PHYSICAL TASKS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Work is performed indoors at a swimming pool. Activities include sitting, standing, walking, running on slippery surfaces, kneeling, crouching, twisting, climbing ladders, swimming, reaching, bending, crawling, and lifting equipment up to 50 pounds. The incumbent must be physically able to react quickly to lifesaving emergencies and perform strenuous activity requiring strength and endurance.

Incumbents may be exposed to blood, bodily fluids, communicable diseases, pool water, chemicals, cleaning solvents, disinfectants, electrical and mechanical hazards. Physical requirements include mobility, vision, hearing and dexterity appropriate to the duties.

OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION

This position is represented by the Lynwood Employees' Association/AFSCME Local 1920 (LEA). Candidates requiring mandatory reenrollment in CALPERS based on prior public agency employment will not be considered for part‑time employment.

City employees are registered as Emergency Disaster Workers and are required to perform assigned Emergency Service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster.
