Qualifications
  • License & Certification
    • Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Law Enforcement certification
    • Pass criminal history, psychological, and polygraph tests
    • Valid Georgia driver’s license

    • Associate’s degree in a related field
  • Experience
    • Five years of law enforcement experience

Primary Responsibilities
  • Assist the local school administration.
    • Provide local school administrators and personnel with the resources to operate a safe and secure school.
    • Provide in‑service training to help administrators be better prepared to deal with security‑related matters.
  • Act as the liaison/facilitator between the school and local law enforcement agencies.
    • Coordinate the law enforcement efforts of the local jurisdiction relative to schools.
    • Work within a school cluster.
    • Develop a communication network between administration, staff, students, parents, and citizens.
    • Serve as a positive role model to bridge the gap between students and law enforcement and prevent crime.
  • Maintain knowledge of procedures for dealing with public agencies that come into schools to deliver subpoenas, interview students/teachers, and arrest individuals.
  • Reduce juvenile delinquency by promoting positive relationships between youth and law enforcement.
  • Take law enforcement action as necessary to protect against unwanted intruders.
  • Assist in a proactive way with the administration in developing plans for a safe school environment for staff and students.
    • Facilitate the completion of safety and security assessments and plan for improvement as well as emergency plans.
  • Plan and help conduct emergency drills on a routine basis.
    • Be able to set and reset fire alarms whether there is a drill or a real emergency.
  • Advise as to what law enforcement measures are appropriate when an incident is perceived as a violation of the law.
  • Be available for conferences and consultations with students, parents, and staff members to assist with problems of a law enforcement or crime prevention nature.
    • Make referrals available to other agencies within the school system and the community for additional assistance.
  • Create and maintain written case files of criminal acts by students and reports of deprived, abused, or neglected children.
    • Share information with the administrator, school social worker, agencies in the law enforcement and judiciary systems, and the Department of Family and Child Services (DFACS) when appropriate.
  • Complete police incident reports for all thefts over $100, damage to property, and accidents that occur within the cluster, and at times, when called upon to work at other schools.
  • Be available to conduct presentations to student and parent groups, including the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), regarding law‑related areas such as drugs, crime prevention, safety, etc.
  • Be cognizant of any gangs and/or social groups existing at the school(s).
    • Share information with the administrator, Director of Safety and Security, student intervention coordinator, agencies in the law enforcement and judiciary systems, and DFACS when appropriate.
  • Be on call and serve at county disciplinary panels according to the schedule as prepared by the Director of Safety and Security, except when on approved absences.
  • Work with the district shop to ensure that each school's alarm system is functioning appropriately.
    • Review false alarms and/or security breaches on a weekly basis.
    • Determine ways to minimize these problems/issues.
  • Maintain a master key and alarm access for all schools in the county in case of an emergency.
  • Report to appropriate agencies all student discipline information required by law and by district administrative procedures.
  • Review the safe school checklist with the administrative team and ensure it is filed on an annual basis as directed.
  • Monitor and respond as appropriate to truancy‑related issues.
  • Perform all law enforcement related duties in a highly professional manner consistent with established procedures and directives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
