Career Scholars Tutors support adult learners in earning their high school equivalency (GED), opening doors to new career and educational opportunities. Tutors provide individualized, one‑on‑one instruction in both in‑person and online settings. At LCEWD, we value collaboration, inclusiveness, and innovation. What you’ll be doing :
  • Providing individualized, one‑on‑one tutoring to adult learners pursuing a High School Equivalency (GED/HSE), supporting progress toward educational and career goals.
  • Delivering instruction in both in‑person and virtual settings, adapting teaching approaches to meet diverse learning styles and schedules.
  • Developing and implementing customized lesson plans, assigning practice activities, and facilitating assessments to support GED/HSE readiness.
  • Supporting learners across all GED/HSE subject areas and evaluating progress toward testing benchmarks.
  • Maintaining open and effective communication with Career Scholars and LCEWD staff regarding learner progress, challenges, and readiness for testing.
  • Utilizing a variety of instructional tools and learning resources to create an engaging, supportive learning environment.
  • Accurately documenting instructional hours, learner progress, and activities in accordance with program and payroll requirements.

What we’re looking for:
  • Working knowledge of High School Equivalency (HSE) subject areas, including Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, and Science.
  • Ability to use multiple instructional tools and teaching methods, adapting instruction to individual learner needs.
  • Familiarity with current HSE test requirements, formats, and subject matter.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain appropriate, supportive student–tutor relationships with young adults.
  • Proficiency in routine software and business applications (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and databases).
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow departmental and County policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Dependable and professional work habits, including regular and predictable attendance.
  • (Preferred) Bilingual English/Spanish verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain concepts to diverse learners.

All candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required will be eliminated from the process.

  • Six (6) months of experience in teaching or tutoring, required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age, required.
  • Must pass criminal background check and pre‑employment drug screen, required.

Please Note:

This is an as‑needed role with flexible hours, supporting both in‑person and remote tutoring as needed. Expected to last 6 months.

An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of required pre‑employment checks or testing.
