Job Overview
The America Reads/America Counts (ARAC) tutoring program is designed to enhance the reading and math skills of Kindergarten-8th grade students in Macon-Bibb County.
ARAC tutors are compensated through federal work-study funds and receive coordination and training from Mercer University’s Center for Community Engagement and ARAC program partners. They provide one-on-one and/or small-group instruction to their tutees and control their schedules each semester by selecting preferred after-school programs, days, and times. The schedule is consistent for the duration of the semester.
Responsibilities- Attend scheduled tutoring sessions.
- Attend all required trainings and meetings.
- Update accountability logs and submit timesheets on time in Canvas, Workday, and Bear Pulse.
- Participate consistently in follow-up, documentation, and evaluation activities.
- Enrolled Mercer student with a federal work-study award.
- Available to tutor during the school day or after school (3:30 – 6:00 pm) for a minimum of two hours per week and a maximum of 20 hours per week.
- Able to pass a background check for the Bibb County School District or nonprofit partner.
- Possess a civic mindset, ability to work with diverse communities, and willingness to discuss issues such as cultural competency, racial equity, implicit bias, and other topics related to educational and social justice.
- Previous experience working with children in a mentoring or tutoring capacity is preferred but not required.
- Competent in multitasking, time management, and prioritizing work assignments.
Pay rate: $16.00/hour to $17.00/hour, depending on ARAC experience and good standing.
Scheduled hours: 10 hours per week.

08/31/2026. End date: 06/30/2027.
