Job Summary

The Nurse Educator participates in the design, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs that improve the delivery of high quality, comprehensive, safe, individualized patient/family‑centered care. The Nurse Educator implements clinical learning and professional development, demonstrating a knowledge base that includes utilization of a variety of teaching strategies, assessment, and evaluation methods.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Supports MWHC mission and goals by working with clinical leaders to identify solutions to clinical care delivery and produce desired outcomes.
  • Incorporates patient safety into all applicable programs and supports staff retention through engagement in employer‑choice activities.
  • Participates in onboarding, interviews, and the implementation of Watson’s and Benner’s theories to promote evidence‑based nursing practice.
  • Assesses educational and professional development needs through direct observation and performance data, differentiating educational needs from system issues.
  • Develops and utilizes multiple communication methods to share information with the health‑care team.
  • Plays a key role in the development and maintenance of policies, procedures, and standards of care.
  • Serves as a resource to nurses, physicians, and other health‑care members, providing current evidence‑based practice information.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements (The Joint Commission, Virginia Department of Health) and implements mechanisms for compliance.
  • Plans and implements educational offerings, including curricular development, inter‑professional education, and orientation programs such as CBOT and residency.
  • Utilizes innovative educational methodologies, adjusts content based on learner knowledge and expertise, and promotes critical thinking and problem solving.
  • Evaluates educational programs for impact on learners, patients, and the organization, and follows up with leaders to assess goal attainment.
  • Maintains staff compliance with performance expectations and contributes feedback during performance reviews.
  • Demonstrates commitment to lifelong learning, professional development, and lifelong growth, and participates in related learning activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Valid RN license from Virginia or a reciprocal compact state.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required;
    Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years clinical experience in a specialty area.
  • Previous experience with education or related experience desired.
  • AHA BLS Provider CPR required at hire; AHA ACLS Provider required at hire.
  • Certified in Nursing Professional Development within 3 years.
  • Scheduling flexibility to meet educational goals; may include evenings, nights, or weekend hours.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills: communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution.
  • Proficiency with electronic systems and programs (Microsoft Office products, online learning tools).
Physical Requirements

Constant (67–100% of workday) use of arms and hands; frequent (34–66% of workday) standing, walking, and sitting; occasional (0–33% of workday) bending, stooping, and squatting; ability to lift 35lbs.; ability to push and pull up to 20lbs.; auditory and visual skills including color determination.

Mental Requirements

Possesses critical thinking and analytical skills. Ability to multi‑task and communicate effectively with a multi‑disciplinary team. Capacity to cope with difficult situations and to tolerate irregular hours including evenings, nights, and weekends.
