School Based Mental Health Service Provider (Bilingual Preferred)

The SBMH Service Provider (Professional Counselor/Social Worker) position will work closely with the administrative, counseling teams, and other appropriate school and district support staff within assigned “cluster” of schools to coordinate, facilitate, and provide mental health services. The primary focus of the SBMH Clinician’s role is to enhance and strengthen school-level resources and interventions for student mental health and wellness, while also building student capacity for positive social and emotional well‑being.

Qualifications

Knowledge of therapy methods appropriate to meet the needs of students and their families; knowledge of agencies and resources available to assist children; familiarity with federal and state laws concerning family rights and behavioral and mental health services.
Ability to identify the behavioral and mental health needs of students; work independently; communicate effectively in oral and written form; maintain accurate records; meet established time frames; establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Provide mental health services to students and their families (as appropriate); conduct individual and group therapy sessions.

Duties and Responsibilities

Collaborate with school and district staff (administrators, counselors, etc.) to plan and implement school‑wide mental health campaigns, training, activities, etc.

Collaborate with school counselors, parents, and identified students to conduct a comprehensive intake for initial mental health screening and individual support plan development.

Use evidence‑based materials, techniques, and social emotional skill‑building curriculums to promote student mental health awareness and skill.

Provide individual mental health counseling and brief interventions for student mental health; address bullying/harassment.

Provide education (prevention and awareness via classes/presentations on topics such as anxiety, grief, anger/stress management, cyber safety, etc.).

Encourage youth leadership and empowerment skills.

Facilitate restorative circles and conflict resolution sessions.

Provide mental health‑related crisis assistance.

Provide appropriate mental health resources, referrals, follow‑up, and program discharge.

Serve as a liaison to and for community resources, next steps involving short‑term and/or long‑term therapy or intervention; advocate for student mental health.

Provide small group mental health skill‑building sessions (i.e., anger/stress management, self‑esteem, grief, relationships, etc.).

Address mental health and mental illness; maladaptive behaviors (those associated with mental health challenges); abuse (physical, emotional, sexual); depression and anxiety (i.e., suicide ideation).

Maintain and track documentation of mental health support for students. Submit reports on student progress.

Abide by SBMH processes and guidelines for student contact, service delivery, documentation, etc.

Provide outreach at community and school events (must be available to assist with occasional evening and weekend events).

Provide tips to parents, teachers and others on approaches and strategies to best support students who may be experiencing social or emotional challenges.

Participate as a member of the District Crisis Response Team and meet regularly with building staff and District Student Support office to support mental health efforts.

Participate in ongoing professional development activities.

Conduct home visits with students/families (when needed).

May assist with planning, coordination, or support of special mental health projects such as universal behavior screening, curated spaces, and other tier 1 activities.

Education, Training and Experience

Master’s Degree (Social Work or Mental Health Counseling) from an accredited college or university. Prior experience and competencies working with school‑aged youth and families who face various challenges; experience in conducting mental health assessment, intake, and discharge; providing interventions, counseling, groups to individuals or groups of school‑aged youth and families.
