Job Description / Summary We are seeking an experienced Blood Bank Laboratory Supervisor to provide operational, technical, and regulatory leadership for a high-complexity Blood Bank and transfusion service. This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department, including staff leadership, quality and compliance oversight, blood product management, technical troubleshooting, competency programs, and continuous performance improvement. The ideal candidate will bring strong, recent Blood Bank leadership experience rather than primarily general laboratory management experience.

This role requires in-depth knowledge of high-complexity transfusion services, Blood Bank regulatory requirements, inspection readiness, policy development, validation, patient safety, and laboratory information systems. Responsibilities Provide day-to-day operational and technical oversight of high-complexity Blood Bank and transfusion service operations. Direct staff workflow and serve as a technical resource for complex Blood Bank testing, transfusion practices, and operational issues. Oversee Blood Bank testing, evaluation of results, quality, accuracy, and validity of laboratory processes.

Maintain compliance with applicable FDA, AABB, CAP, Joint Commission, and other regulatory and accreditation requirements. Lead and support Blood Bank regulatory inspections, including inspection preparation, documentation, response to findings, and implementation of corrective actions. Develop, review, revise, and implement Blood Bank policies, procedures, and regulatory documentation. Oversee validation studies, competency programs, quality initiatives, corrective action plans, and process improvements. Support high-complexity transfusion services, including antibody investigations/workups, massive transfusion protocols, blood product management, and specialty transfusion testing, as applicable.

Oversee blood product inventory, storage, handling, distribution, documentation, and regulatory compliance. Identify and address potential patient safety, quality, and compliance risks within Blood Bank operations. Monitor quality indicators, investigate variances, and implement corrective and preventive actions when necessary. Provide oversight and troubleshooting support for Blood Bank instrumentation, LIS, middleware, and related laboratory technology. Participate in implementation and validation of new Blood Bank instrumentation, systems, testing platforms, and processes.

Coordinate staff orientation, training, continuing education, and competency assessments. Recruit, coach, develop, and manage staff while establishing clear performance expectations and promoting professional growth. Promote a positive team culture and collaborate effectively with laboratory leadership and other departments across the organization. Participate in strategic initiatives, departmental projects, and performance improvement activities. Monitor departmental resources, operational performance, and budget compliance and address identified variances.

Maintain current knowledge of advancements in transfusion medicine, Blood Bank regulations, laboratory technology, and patient safety practices. Qualifications / Requirements Bachelor's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or an equivalent related field required. MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP), or equivalent certification from an approved accrediting agency required. Minimum of 3 years of technical laboratory services and operations experience required. 5+ years of Blood Bank experience preferred, with substantial direct involvement in Blood Bank/transfusion service operations.

Previous Blood Bank leadership, supervisory, or operational oversight experience strongly preferred. Recent experience working in a high-complexity Blood Bank or transfusion service environment preferred. Strong experience with transfusion services, which may include antibody identification/workups, massive transfusion protocols, complex serologic testing, blood product management, and/or IRL support. Demonstrated knowledge of FDA, AABB, CAP, and Joint Commission requirements applicable to Blood Bank and transfusion services.
