Job DescriptionJob Summary
This position administers and directs the operation of a school system’s police department involved in the protection of life and property; policy and law enforcement; and prevention and investigation of crime.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsThis job has supervisory responsibilities.
Essential Job Functions- Plans, organizes, and directs all activities of the Campus Police Department.
- Supervises all Campus Police personnel; directs and coordinates activities of department personnel.
- Screens and interviews applicants for employment in the Campus Police Department; directs and assists in preparing work schedules, assignments, and training programs of departmental staff.
- Directs and assists in the training of employees; directs and assists in conducting employee performance evaluations and inspections.
- Prepares and administers the departmental budget; prepares a long-term strategic plan for the Campus Police Department; reviews and adopts recommendations and suggestions regarding improved procedures and guidelines that are needed by the department; makes recommendations for the purchase of equipment and supplies.
- Ensures that equipment is properly maintained and utilized by all members of the department.
- Manages coordinating data collection, interpretation, and dissemination of information to include crime and trending analysis of crime occurring on District property.
- Oversees emergency operations personnel and manages communications for the District to disseminate information regarding early warnings of adverse weather or other conditions affecting safe school operations.
- Studies and suggests ways to improve the performance of the Campus Police Department and to better protect the community it serves; advises principals, administrators, and others on law enforcement and safety matters.
- Makes presentations to schools, classes, clubs, and other organizations on safety, law enforcement, and other topics related to the Campus Police Department; performs public and media relations duties as necessary; acts as a liaison with media agencies and representatives regarding issues concerning the Campus Police Department and school system safety and law enforcement.
- Assists with internal affairs investigations and personnel matters.
- Obeys and observes the policies, rules, and procedures of the Campus Police Department and the Bibb County Board of Education.
- Reviews reports, records, and statements as necessary.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field;
Master’s degree preferred. Ten (10) years of law enforcement experience with a minimum of five years of experience in a leadership position. Some experience working in education security (K-12 or post-secondary). Prior training in law enforcement. Or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of pertinent laws, codes, policies, and/or regulations, personnel processes, standard business practices, BCSD policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of criminal and investigative procedures.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws.
- Knowledge of management and supervision techniques.
- Skill in the use of firearms and other police equipment.
- Skill in the use of computers and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with administrators, teachers, students, and the general public.
- Ability to interpret, apply, and establish rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to carry and effectively use firearms and other assigned equipment.
- Ability to give orders and gain compliance from assigned personnel.
- Ability to make decisions under pressure.
- Ability to control, motivate, and train personnel to perform their duties in a safe, efficient, and purposeful manner.
