Strong clinical assessment and med-surg nursing skills for a Level 1 Trauma Hospital; IV insertion and care; central line management; wound care and post-op monitoring; cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation; care coordination with interdisciplinary teams; discharge planning and patient education, particularly on renal and fluid management
Description:
This position is for an RN specializing in Med Surg/Tele.
The facility has 637 licensed beds and a Level 1 Trauma designation.
It is a teaching hospital and certified as a Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center.
The unit has 35 beds with a census of 35 patients.
Patient types and common diagnoses include orthopedic and trauma cases, head trauma-hemorrhage, and patients with acute or chronic diseases.
Post-operative patients and those with co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, infections, congestive heart failure, and electrolyte imbalances are also common.
Patient ratios are approximately 1:4-6 for RNs and LPNs, with 2-3 CNAs per shift.
Required skills include tracheostomy care, chest tube management, IV starts, glucomander, insulin drips, and heparin drips.
Travel nurses will need to pass an EKG competency exam.
The unit team includes CNAs to assist with vital signs, glucose checks, bathing, feeding, ambulating patients, and transporting as needed.
Charge nurses may also have patient assignments.
The facility has resource nurses, including discharge nurses, available.
There is 24/7 availability of respiratory therapists and hospitalists.
Telemetry monitoring is performed by a central telemetry unit.
The Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system in use is EPIC.
Technology includes various monitors and equipment for patient care.
Nurses will be responsible for coordinating care and managing patients efficiently.
The schedule includes rotating weekend shifts, with the expectation to work on major holidays.
RTO requests must receive manager approval.
The unit culture is described as busy, with teamwork emphasized.
