Proficiency in IV insertion and care, central line management, and wound care. Experience with cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation. Skills in care coordination with the interdisciplinary team, discharge planning, and patient education management.
Description:
The role is for an RN specializing in Med Surg/Telemetry. The facility has 637 licensed beds with a Level 1 Trauma designation. It is a teaching hospital recognized as a Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center. The unit consists of 35 beds with a typical census of 35 patients. Patient ratios are RN: 1:4-6 and CNA: 2-3 per shift. Patient types include those with acute or chronic diseases and post-operative surgeries.
Common co-morbidities include diabetes, hypertension, infections, CHF, and electrolyte imbalances. The role does not require first-time travelers to be excluded. Nurses will have support from CNAs who assist with vital signs, glucose checks, bathing, feeding, ambulating patients, and hourly rounding. There is a unit secretary on shift from 7 AM to 11 PM, with house-wide coverage from 11 PM to 7 AM.
Resource nurses are available for discharge and other needs, with a 24/7 respiratory therapist and hospitalist services. Telemetry monitoring is conducted through a central telemetry unit. The facility employs EPIC for EMR, Alaris for IV pumps, and Pyxis for medication dispensing. Nurses will utilize technology for patient monitoring, including vital signs, glucose stat strips, and other necessary equipment. There is no on-call requirement for this position.
Holidays require coverage for one shift of each major holiday. RTO requests will require manager approval. Nurses will rotate weekends with a schedule of 5-6 weekend shifts out of 12. The unit culture emphasizes a busy environment with teamwork. Scrub colors are navy for RNs and ceil blue for LPNs.
