American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position at a Level 1 Trauma teaching hospital, requiring at least 2 years of Med/Tele experience and a GA or compact RN license.
Details- Work in a 35-bed Med/Surg Telemetry unit within a 637-bed Level 1 Trauma, academic teaching hospital that also serves as a Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center
- Patient population includes orthopedic and trauma cases (fractures, head trauma, osteomyelitis), post-op surgical patients, and those with acute or chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, CHF, and electrolyte imbalances
- Patient ratios: RN 1:4–6, supported by LPNs (1:4–6) and 2–3 CNAs per shift
- Common procedures and skills include trach care, chest tube management, PIV/IV insertion, central line management, glucommander, insulin drips, heparin drips, and cardiac telemetry monitoring
- EMR is Epic; experience preferred
- Equipment includes Alaris IV pumps, Pyxis med dispensing, Philips monitors, VS3 vital sign monitors, Dynamap portable monitors, bladder scanners, PCA pain management, glucommander, external fixators, and chest/JP/Hemovac drains
- 12-hour night shifts, 7p–7a, 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation of 6 shifts per 6-week schedule
- No on-call requirements
- Floating required to all adult med/surg and telemetry units within the hospital
- Active GA or compact RN license required
- Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg Telemetry RN experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
- BLS required; ACLS preferred
- Basic Cardiac Rhythm (BCR) competency required — candidates must pass an EKG competency exam as part of onboarding compliance
- Medical-surgical or nephrology nursing national certification preferred
- Strong clinical assessment skills appropriate for a Level 1 Trauma hospital environment
- Proficiency with telemetry interpretation, IV therapy, wound care, post-op monitoring, and care coordination
- Must provide last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth for consideration
- At least 1 professional reference dated within the past year, from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN, required for consideration
- Responsibilities include cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation, wound care, post-op monitoring, IV and central line management, insulin and heparin drip titration, discharge planning, and patient education with an emphasis on renal and fluid management
- Unit is supported by CNAs, a unit secretary (7a–11p), a house-wide call secretary overnight, charge nurses, a PICC team, discharge nurses, a resource float team, respiratory therapy (24/7), hospitalists (24/7), intensivists (24/7), and a central telemetry monitoring unit
- Orientation consists of 1 day of facility orientation with educational modules followed by 2 days of departmental orientation
- Holiday coverage required — travelers are expected to work 75% of holidays, with one shift each for Thanksgiving Day or the day after, 12/24 or 12/25, and 12/31 or 1/1
- RTO requests require manager approval
- RN scrub color is navy blue
