Description

American Traveler is hiring an RN
- Med/Surg Tele for a Level 1 Trauma teaching hospital, requiring 2+ years of Med/Surg Tele experience and GA or compact RN licensure.

Details
  • Med/Surg Tele unit with 35 beds and a full census of 35 patients
  • Level 1 Trauma teaching hospital with Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center designations
  • Patient population includes acute and chronic disease, post-op surgeries, and comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, infections, CHF, and electrolyte imbalances
  • RN to patient ratio of 1:4-6, LPN ratio of 1:4-6, with 2-3 CNAs per shift
  • 12-hour day shifts from 7a-7p, 36 hours per week scheduled, 40 standard hours
  • Weekend rotation of 6 shifts within a 6-week period
  • No on-call or call-back requirements
  • Floats to all adult Med/Surg and telemetry units in house
  • EMR: EPIC
  • Central Telemetry Unit monitors cardiac telemetry
  • Uses Alaris IV pumps, Pyxis med dispensing, and Phillips monitors
  • Unit equipment includes VS3 vital sign monitors, Nova Glucose Stat Strips, Dynamapp portable vital sign monitors, bladder scanners, portable oxygen systems, external fixators, chest tubes, JP and Hemovac drains, Glucommander, PCA pumps, and suction machines
Requirements
  • Active GA or compact RN license required
  • BLS required
  • BCR (Basic Cardiac Rhythm) required, including passing an EKG competency exam as part of compliance
  • ACLS preferred but not required
  • Medical-Surgical national certification preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg Tele RN experience required
  • Minimum 12 months of core work experience in the unit specialty area, with most recent experience within the last year
  • Skilled in trach care, chest tube management, PIV starts, Glucommander use, insulin and heparin drip management, and cardiac drip titration
  • Experience with IV insertion, central line management, and wound care
  • Strong clinical assessment skills suited for a Level 1 Trauma hospital setting
  • EPIC EMR experience required
  • Last 4 digits of SSN and full DOB required for consideration
  • Minimum 1 professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
Additional Information
  • Responsibilities include cardiac monitoring, telemetry interpretation, wound care, post-op monitoring, and discharge planning
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary care teams including 24/7 RT, hospitalist, and intensivist coverage
  • CNA support available for vitals, glucose checks, bathing, feeding, ambulation, and transport (transport team also available)
  • Unit secretary support 7a-11p, with house-wide call secretary coverage 11p-7a
  • Resource and discharge nurse team floats to support all units
  • PICC team available, though unit is not an IV team
  • Lab collect phlebotomy used on most units; nurses draw from CVLs
  • Orientation includes 1 day of facility orientation with educational modules and 2 days of departmental orientation
  • Scrub color requirement:
    Navy for RNs
  • Free parking available around campus, with paid deck parking as an option
  • Unit culture described as busy but team-oriented
  • Must work one day of each major holiday:
    Thanksgiving or day after, Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, and New Year's Eve or New Year's Day
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • No radius rule applies; local candidates receive the same rate as travelers
  • Returning employees must be separated from any AHSE facility for at least 1 year after working a permanent position there
