Major responsibilities
  • Patrol assigned jurisdiction and observe for unsafe, unsecure, or illegal activity.
  • Accomplish and document assigned patrols in accordance with established procedure and time frames.
  • Respond to calls for assistance and complete uniform incident reports as appropriate.
  • Appropriately and effectively intervene when encountering unruly, abusive, combative, threatening, or armed persons.
  • Communicate calmly, factually, objectively, and courteously with all persons and coordinate with community police agencies as appropriate.
  • Document work activities and incidents, and complete investigations of criminal activity within corporate jurisdiction.
  • Maintain all training and competency required to maintain Georgia law‑enforcement certification and demonstrate required skills through periodic assessments.
Licensure, registration, and/or certification required
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Training from Atrium Health:
    Non‑Violent Crisis Intervention/De‑escalation and defensive tactics, within 90 days of hire.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
  • GPSTC (24.0 Hours).
  • CPI/Restraint Training.
  • P.O.S.T. certification number.
Education required
  • High School Diploma / GED required.
Experience required
  • Previous security, military, or law‑enforcement experience preferred.
  • Minimum four years as a police officer.
  • Good decision‑making and strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven performance under stressful situations.
  • Respond to acts of violence and manage patient valuables per hospital policy.
  • Conduct investigations and prepare reports at incident scenes.
  • Respond to all security alarms, both in‑house and off‑site properties.
  • Patrol and control access to the Emergency Center, escort patients to seclusion or T‑6 with safety in mind, and perform required rounds.
  • Report hazards and security risks in both secured and unsecured areas.
Knowledge, skills & abilities required
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and the criminal justice system.
  • Knowledge of departmental, law‑enforcement, GCIC, and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Computer operation and job‑related software skills.
  • Policy and procedure development skills.
  • Ability to prepare clear and comprehensive reports and obtain information through interviews.
  • Ability to investigate violations of departmental policy and state laws.
  • Successful completion of background investigation and drug screen prior to employment.
  • For qualifying positions, completion of a psychological evaluation if required by policy.
Physical requirements and working conditions
  • Stand or walk majority of time with occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching; may need to run or exert intense physical effort.
  • Visual and auditory acuity required; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Exposure to all‑weather elements.
Preferred job requirements
  • Valid driver’s license and GPSTC (24.0 Hours).
Preferred education
  • Completion of approved basic law‑enforcement curriculum.
  • Completion of BLS and CPI within first 30 days.
  • Certificate in Law Enforcement.
  • Two years of public‑interaction and physical activity experience.
  • Proof of comparable patrol experience.
Preferred experience
  • 1 year in a security related field.
  • Previous security, military, or law‑enforcement experience preferred.
Preferred knowledge/skills/abilities
  • All items listed under “Knowledge, skills & abilities required” plus additional hospital policy awareness.
  • Mandatory annual P.O.S.T. certification and hospital police training.
  • Knowledge and skills to serve patients of all ages, including infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
