Position: Sheriff’s Office: Detention Officer / Jailer

Job Summary

Handling daily activities of inmates, seeing to their safety, health, and needs. Maintain order and ensuring security of the Jail. Receive and discharge inmates using proper booking, identification, and security procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Receive inmates, gather and record booking information either in writing or computerized documents
  • Deal with prisoners, i.e., searches body/clothing of persons taken into custody. Complete the booking process through data entry, all related forms, fingerprinting, and photographing
  • Protect the civil rights of persons taken into custody. Explain booking and bonding process and rules and regulations of the jail
  • Secure and maintain personal property of arrested persons and issue receipts for same
  • Issue jail clothing, bedding, personal hygiene items, and make cell assignments
  • Calm disputes in the jail, seek solutions to jail problems and other related duties
  • Direct inmate workers in their daily activities and supervise their assignments
  • Direct general inmate activities, supervise recreation, commissary and other related duties
  • Able to efficiently and appropriately type/enter information i.e., reports, complete forms, general information into a computerized system and retrieve same when necessary
  • Take and record vital signs of inmates and alerts medical staff when necessary, e.g., illness, injury or other medical emergency
  • Administer emergency first aid when necessary
  • Recommend disciplinary measures when observing inmate disciplinary problems
  • Conduct searches of cell areas for contraband, improvised weapons, and breeches of security
  • Complete all related forms and return inmate property upon release of inmates
  • Monitor video cameras and inmate movements. Work control panels and answer phones in a professional manner
  • Acquire and maintain learning and training in order to satisfactorily perform assigned tasks
Qualifications & Eligibility Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have no felony convictions
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must successfully pass a strict, thorough background investigation, to include polygraph, psychological, drug screen and physical
  • Willing to accept shift duty, day or night
Knowledge, Skills, and Ability
  • Ability to learn detention center methods, policies, procedures, techniques and apply such knowledge to specific situations
  • Able to proficiently use a computer with Windows applications and other related software. Able to operate copiers, fax, and other types of electronic equipment
  • Ability to work routinely under highly stressful conditions, including life threatening situations
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language, both orally and in writing. These abilities are frequently required to develop clear and comprehensive reports and to obtain information. This includes the ability to read and comprehend instructions, agency correspondence, policies, and procedures, and evidentiary documents; to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions
  • Able to work efficiently and complete tasks and projects with frequent unscheduled interruptions
  • Ability to deal professionally and fairly in interactions with the general public; to effectively communicate with the public; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other county departments and employees, as well as, with county officials

This position is located within a secure detention facility and requires working in and around incarcerated inmate populations. Employees must adhere to all security protocols, safety procedures, and detention facility regulations while performing assigned duties.
