Summary and Relationship to the Curriculum: All classified positions will strengthen the delivery of instruction to support the district’s mission. This position supports a safe, secure, and orderly school environment by monitoring school facilities and activities, assisting with controlled entry, identifying and responding to safety concerns, and interacting appropriately and professionally with students, staff, parents, and visitors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operates weapons detectors, handheld screening devices, radios, security monitoring equipment, and other equipment or technology associated with the position after receiving appropriate training.
- Interacts effectively and professionally with students, staff members, administrators, parents, visitors, and the public, using tact, good judgment, and appropriate interpersonal skills.
- Assists with the safe and orderly entry into the school building, including monitoring designated entrances and facilitating student and visitor screening through weapons detectors and other district-approved security procedures.
- Follows established procedures when prohibited, suspicious, or potentially unsafe items are identified or when additional assistance is needed.
- Promptly reports safety hazards, suspicious activity, code of conduct violations, security concerns, and emergency situations to appropriate school administrators or other designated personnel.
- Responds to incidents and emergency situations in accordance with school district policies, established safety procedures, and the direction of school administrators.
- Works closely and cooperatively with law enforcement, school resource officers, and other appropriate personnel on mitigating campus security issues.
- Maintains awareness of school emergency procedures, evacuation routes, shelter locations, communication procedures, and assigned responsibilities during drills or actual emergencies.
- Serves as a member of the campus safety team.
- Communicates effectively by radio, telephone, or other district-approved communication devices with administrators, staff members, school resource officers, and other appropriate personnel.
- Completes paperwork and documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Participates in required training.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Education and/or
Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Experience as a law enforcement officer or armed services personnel preferred. - Certificate or License
Required:
Post-hire completion of the NASRO School Safety Officer Course at School District expense within the first year of employment. - Language
Skills:
Must have the ability to read and comprehend job-specific technical information, simple instructions, short correspondence, memos, and position-specific manuals; to relay technical information to others in understandable terms; and to work effectively with diverse populations.
