Summary
Under general supervision, performs highly skilled work in the operation of special motorized equipment in construction and maintenance activities. Instructions for new or unusually difficult assignments are specific in nature, but the work for recurring tasks is performed in accordance with standard practices. Work is reviewed through reports and observation of results achieved.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Operates equipment such as track‑mounted crane, twelve‑yard dump truck, concrete mixer, power shovel, drag line, farm‑type tractor used for roadway cleaning, bulldozer, large excavator, street sweeper and/or backhoe/front‑end loader for a variety of construction and demolition related duties.
- Opens or digs ditches.
- Pours concrete.
- Loads materials.
- Operates knuckle boom truck.
- Operates vacuum street sweeper with hydraulic controls.
- Operates a power lift boom attachment for intake hose assembly to clean catch basins.
- Operates backhoe/front‑end loader for loading, scraping, grading, lowering, lifting, demolition type work.
- Excavates and does similar tasks.
- Performs minor maintenance servicing and repairs on equipment, replacing and adjusting parts.
- Lays tiles and pipes other employees as appropriate.
- Trains others to operate equipment.
- Performs additional unique and specialized duties as may be required by the department.
- Completes special projects and performs other miscellaneous duties as required.
- Performs other duties as required.
High school diploma and/or G.E.D. or equivalent combination of education and experience. Three (3) years experience in operations of heavy equipment; including experience in dump trucks, bulldozer, large excavator, front‑end loaders, backhoe, etc.
NecessarySpecial Requirements
- Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License, Class A or B with no air brake restrictions.
- Must pass a vision test for night driving.
- Must be able to work additional hours after normal working hours on a 24‑hour basis as needed.
- Must be able to substitute and serve as acting Crew Leader when required.
The Heavy Equipment Operator must be knowledgeable of the following principles, procedures, and concepts:
- Knowledge of the operation and care of heavy‑duty equipment such as a crane, power shovel, concrete mixer, street sweeper, backhoe, or related heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to equipment operation.
- Ability to understand and follow quickly and accurately written and oral instructions.
- Knowledge of defensive driving.
- Written and oral communication skills.
- Skill in the safe operation and servicing of specialized heavy equipment.
- Skill in the operation of equipment utilizing hydraulic controls.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and with members of the general public.
- Ability to pass vision test for night driving.
