Accounting Analyst

Under immediate direction, ensures accurate financial transactions, analyzes accounting records, provides technical expertise to support the County's financial operations; and performs related duties as assigned.

Examples of Duties

The job functions listed below are not inclusive or exclusive and are intended only as illustrations or examples of the various types of work that may be performed in various divisions/departments. Types of work performed shall be within the scope and licensure (if required) for the classification. Some duties, knowledge, and abilities may be performed in a learning capacity by positions at the entry (I) level.

  • Creates and evaluates cash receipts prior to final endorsement; guarantees accuracy and adherence to financial policies and regulatory standards.
  • Analyzes accounting records to calibrate checkbooks and identify discrepancies and inaccuracies.
  • Conducts daily assessments of bank statements, financial reports, and affiliated documents; identifies disparities and rectifies errors.
  • Oversees and balances diverse accounts to affirm fund availability and numerical accuracy.
  • Provides support and advice to County staff and the public concerning accounting and budgetary principles and methodologies.
  • Devises comprehensive research strategies to gather, compile, and scrutinize data from diverse sources on intricate accounting related subjects.
  • Prepares technical records, reports, and summaries for presentations and reporting requirements.
  • Interprets data, identifies alternatives, and justifies recommendations based on thorough analysis.
  • Monitors the Auditor Journal Entries Mailbox for journal entries or wires from other departments or external agencies; processes incoming entries promptly and accurately.
  • Identifies opportunities for process improvement within accounting and financial operations. Collaborates with relevant teams to implement efficiency enhancements.
  • Participates in internal and external audits, providing necessary documentation.
  • Assists in budget preparation and financial planning activities.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams on financial projects and initiatives.
  • Stays updated on changes in accounting standards, regulations, and industry trends.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and methodologies of accounting principles, practices, and regulations.
  • Principles and methodologies of budgeting processes, financial planning, and forecasting.
  • Methods and techniques to analyze financial statements, reports, and conduct financial research.
  • Financial software, spreadsheet applications, and data analysis tools.
  • Analytical skills for interpreting complex financial data and making informed decisions.
  • Relevant accounting standards, regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and ordinances relevant to the area of responsibility.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and County staff.
  • The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to the work performed.

Ability to:

  • Analyze financial statements, report, and conduct financial research.
  • Apply relevant accounting standards, regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Interpret and analyze complex financial data and make informed decisions.
  • Identify discrepancies in financial data, make corrections, and ensure accuracy.
  • Devise solutions to address errors, discrepancies, and process inefficiencies.
  • Present complex financial information clearly and effectively.
  • Integrate process improvement methodologies to enhance efficiency.
  • Understand, interpret, and apply all pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures, and standards relevant to the work performed.
  • Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to the work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and Experience Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • One (1) year of professional accounting, auditing, or financial analysis experience.
