About Us:
The Interpreter Services Department is responsible for bridging the communication barrier to our limited and non-English speaking patients and families 24hrs a day, 365 days of the year. Our team of professional interpreters convey the content and spirit of what is said, working as cultural brokers and advocates for our patients and families. Interpreters facilitate communication in person, over the phone, and on video, allowing for the provision of language services to all of Valley Children’s clinics and units.
Additionally, our translators diligently process all document translation requests. The team holds their work to the highest standards and abide by the strongest sense of ethics.
The interpreter department includes certified Spanish, Mixteco, and ASL in-house interpreters. The department strives to facilitate any other language needs. We can provide documents printed in Braille for patients that are visually impaired and an amplifier for patients who are hard of hearing. The department also facilitates bilingual fluency assessments for any other staff that speaks a language other than English at VCH.
Job Summary:Accountable to provide medical interpretation for patients, families and clinical staff. Possess a full command (verbal and written) of the English language as well as the language they will use in their interpreter encounters (e.g. Spanish, etc.). Acts as advocate, culture broker, clarifier, and conduit for Limited English Proficient (LEP) persons. May clarify written consents and hospital forms, and advocate for the LEP regarding cultural differences.
QualificationsEducation
- High School Diploma/G.E.D. (required)
- Minimum 18 months Interpreter or equivalent experience utilizing interpreter skills (required)
- Minimum six (6) months Health care setting and/or hospital environment (preferred)
- Bilingual Skills Demonstrates full command (verbal and written) of the English language and second language, e.g., Spanish. Medical terminology or equivalent experience in a medical setting.
