Position: Correctional Officer (lateral) - Continuous

Correctional Officer

Hiring Bonus Lateral - Up To $15,000

The Department of Human Resources shall maintain a continuous recruitment for lateral transfers and will evaluate and rank eligible candidates upon receipt of an application. Individuals must be currently employed as full-time Correctional Officers in State or County Adult Correctional Facilities. Salary Range Correctional Officer I: $4,480.84-$5,510.87 per month Correctional Officer II: $4,940.13-$6,075.73 per month

Under general supervision, supervises inmates and a variety of inmate activities in a detention facility; maintains security and monitors inmate behavior; performs related work as required. Receives direct supervision from an assigned Correctional Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, or other management staff, as assigned.

Examples Of Duties
  • Receives, books, searches, photographs, and fingerprints inmates; supervises and monitors inmate conduct during booking and screening procedures; receives and records personal property of inmates; assures that inmates are clothed and assigned to cells.
  • Maintains security of inmates by taking periodic counts and by surveillance of activities; supervises and monitors inmate activities during meals, work assignments, cleaning assignments and other activities; periodically inspects custodial facility and living quarters for cleanliness and proper order; escorts inmates to specified locations inside custodial facilities; prepares and completes records, reports, and forms.
  • Identifies and monitors inmates with special needs including psychological and/or drug-related problems; provides basic medical assistance when necessary, during medical emergencies; maintains discipline and orderly conduct; applies appropriate restraints on inmates; subdues violent inmates.
  • Keeps inventory of clothing and other supply items; completes receipts; processes civil request forms; performs a variety of duties related to the operation of the facilities.
  • Screens parole applications; discharges or transfers inmates, prepares inmates for release; prepares appropriate reports and paperwork, releases personal property.
  • Performs duties consistent with AB 2197 and Penal Code 831.5 (i) as follows: arrest without warrant upon reasonable cause to believe that a misdemeanor or felony has occurred in the presence of the officer; search property, cells, prisoners or visitors; conduct strip or body cavity searches of prisoners in accordance with applicable law; conduct searches and seizures pursuant to a duly issued warrant;

    segregate prisoners; and classify prisoners for the purposes of housing or participation in supervised activities.
  • Stays current with knowledge related to public safety by attending professional conferences and in-service education programs, as well as by reviewing information obtained from Department memoranda, staff meetings and professional publications to attain and maintain public safety-related knowledge and skills and determine the impact of developments and change on providing service excellence.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to and understanding of historically minoritized groups and participates in professional development activities to increase cultural competency to enhance equity-minded practices within the county.

When assigned to Classification:
Conducts internal affairs investigations; participates in disciplinary hearings and actions; conducts criminal investigations within the facility; investigates criminal and gang related activities within the facility; reviews inmate classifications.

When assigned to Training:
Conducts pre-employment investigations; coordinates and implements the Correctional Officer training programs.

When assigned to Transport:
Searches and restrains inmates to be transported; transports inmates to and from courts, prisons, jails, and other facilities; supervises and secures prisoners during transport; provides security at court; serves as bailiff as necessary; inspects and maintains vehicles as assigned.

  • Operations, functions, services, and activities of a local law enforcement agency.
  • Current local, state, and federal laws, codes, and regulations particularly those related to apprehension, arrest, search and seizure, preliminary crime scene investigation, evidence and records maintenance, patrol, and traffic control.
  • Federal, State, and local laws, rules and procedures governing the activities of a correctional facility, law enforcement agency and related criminal justice members.
  • Current crime prevention and law enforcement methods and procedures including those used in investigation and identification, patrol, traffic control, records management, and care and custody of persons and property.
