Under direction, to lead, oversee, and participate in the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for performing a variety of skilled inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, servicing, and repair work on automotive and emergency equipment; trains and oversees on the use and operation of tools and equipment; estimates time, material, and equipment required and orders parts and supplies; maintains inventory; makes field and emergency repairs as required;

and performs related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from assigned management or supervisory personnel. Exercises technical and functional direction over and provides training to lower-level staff. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

  • Leads, reviews, and participates in the work of staff performing a variety of skilled inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, servicing, and repair work on automotive and emergency equipment. oversees the workflow of assigned staff and/or work unit; ensures that work is completed on time and is consistent with the work quality standards.
  • Oversees and trains on the use and operation of tools and equipment used in the maintenance of grounds; trains assigned employees including in the areas of work methods, techniques, and operations.
  • Participates in and provides feedback for personnel actions including selection, performance evaluation, promotion, and disciplinary actions.
  • Estimates time, material, and equipment required for assigned jobs; requisitions materials as required; orders parts as necessary and ensures parts ordered are received in a timely fashion.
  • Inspects, locates, and diagnoses mechanical and body defects on County automotive and emergency equipment; determines the extent of necessary repairs.
  • Operates automotive diagnostic computer and scanning equipment and systems; diagnoses and repairs multiple computer systems, hybrid vehicles, batteries and charging systems; performs complete brake service to brake shoes and pads, cylinders, calipers, drums, and rotors including anti-lock brake systems.
  • Overhauls, repairs, and adjusts transmissions, differentials, clutches, and engines; performs engine tune-ups, replacing ignition parts and cleaning and adjusting carburetors and fuel injection systems.
  • Replaces or repairs faulty parts including wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, computer control systems, emission control systems, and other parts and equipment.
  • Repairs and replaces components including alternators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches; performs front-end repairs; repairs and replaces water pumps and air conditioner compressors.
  • Performs smog inspections on County vehicles; makes field emergency repairs as necessary and performs related mechanic repairs as required.
  • Drives vehicles from various vendor shops and sites; tests safety and drivability.
  • Performs, designs, and installs wiring looms and welding work to adapt and fabricate parts and equipment; installs emergency warning equipment and radios.
  • Maintains records on time and material used; road tests repaired equipment; repairs, replaces, and balances tires.
  • Maintains proper inventory of parts and supplies for equipment maintenance and repair work.
  • Operates a variety of equipment and vehicles; performs the more difficult equipment operation assignments.
  • Observes and complies with County and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Employment Standards / Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:
  • Principles of providing functional direction and training.
  • Principles, practices, methods, and techniques of automotive and equipment servicing and repair.
  • Principles and methods of gas and electrical welding.
  • Operational and care of internal combustion engines and components.
  • Naturally aspirated, forced induction, and hybrid vehicles and electrical systems.
  • Using and diagnosing various vehicle computer systems.
  • Principles, practices, and methods of preventative maintenance programs.
  • Vehicular air conditioning systems and cooling systems.
  • Use and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power, and shop equipment and tools.
  • Safety procedures and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and ordinances relevant to the area(s) of responsibility.
