The Special Education Adult Transition Teacher will be responsible for providing tailored educational support to young adults with special needs as they transition from school to post‑school life. Your role will involve creating and implementing individualized education plans (IEPs) that address the unique needs and goals of each student. You will collaborate closely with other educators, support staff, families, and community resources to facilitate successful transitions and promote independence and self‑advocacy among your students.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate with a Special Education endorsement.
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities, preferably in a transition or post‑secondary setting.
- Commitment to promoting independence, self‑determination, and advocacy skills in students with special needs.
- Ability to differentiate instruction and adapt teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and problem‑solving skills.
- Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices related to transition services.
- Assess students' strengths, needs, and goals through observation, testing, and consultation with other professionals.
- Collaborate with students, families, and support team members to develop comprehensive IEPs that outline academic, vocational, and life skills objectives.
- Ensure that IEPs comply with state and federal regulations, including transition requirements outlined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
- Design and implement instructional activities and materials tailored to students' individual learning styles, abilities, and interests.
- Provide direct instruction in academic subjects, vocational skills, daily living skills, and social‑emotional development.
- Adapt curriculum and teaching strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs and promote student engagement and success.
- Facilitate transition planning meetings with students, families, and relevant stakeholders to identify post‑secondary goals and develop transition plans.
- Connect students with community resources, agencies, and post‑secondary programs that support their transition to adulthood.
- Provide ongoing guidance and support to help students navigate the transition process and develop essential life skills for independent living and employment.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress, including assessments, IEP goals, and transition outcomes.
- Use formal and informal assessment tools to monitor student growth and adjust instructional strategies as needed.
- Regularly communicate with students, families, and support team members to share progress updates and collaborate on goal‑setting and intervention strategies.
- Collaborate with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, therapists, and other professionals to ensure coordinated support for students with special needs.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current on best practices in special education, transition services, and instructional strategies.
- Actively contribute to a positive and inclusive school culture that values diversity, equity, and student success.
