Special Education Center Based Teacher-ASD
Compensation:
At the appropriate step on the Teachers' Salary Schedule Plus $7,500 Annual Stipend
Basic Function:
Deliver instruction to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, in accordance with the Individualized Education Program.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate or enrollment in an approved teaching preparation program
- A current Special Education endorsement in any of the following areas cognitive impairment, emotional impairment, specific learning disability, or Autism preferred
- Background in child development with special emphasis on language, communication, and cognitive development
- Understanding of behavioral intervention techniques
- Ability to plan and implement an Essential Elements based curriculum
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Prior experience with students with autism preferred
- With training, is able to implement emergency seclusion and restraint procedures
- Strong interpersonal skills required
- Ability to withstand the strain of the position
Responsibilities:
- Provides effective individualized instruction and services to address the academic, social and physical needs to post-secondary level students with significant developmental disabilities as well as behavioral and/or medical concerns.
- Facilitate student progress in the transition focused functional curriculum
- Provide opportunities for students to apply life skills during community based instruction outings.
- Establish and maintain a safe, orderly structured classroom
- Work cooperatively with administration, multidisciplinary team, education colleagues, families and agencies to provide appropriate services for assigned students
- Assure student safety and safety of others by implementing only approved Positive Behavior Support methods and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention techniques to address behavioral issues as required
- Provide service and maintain records including Medicaid billing according to compliance standards established for the district, state and federal rules, regulations and procedures
- Coordinate necessary meetings and paperwork including METs and IEPs for caseload students, ensure accommodations are complied with and all timelines are attained
- Assume a leadership role in directing the activities of paraprofessional staff by providing necessary support, communication, direction and feedback
- Maintain regular, positive communication with parents and Lamphere Center staff regarding caseload students
- Participate in a trans disciplinary service delivery model with related service providers, such as Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language service providers, Physical Therapists, Psychologist, and School Social Workers
- Provide information to parents regarding appropriate community agencies and resources
- Continue professional development through membership in organizations, conference and workshop attendance, and/or university course work
