Under the direction of the Director of Public Works, the employee oversees and directs the maintenance of all City fire stations, vehicles, and equipment. The employee oversees the continual testing and maintenance of equipment and apparatus to maintain and improve the City's Insurance Services Office (ISO) rating. Develops and administers the Fire Department portion of the annual Public Works budget. Considerable independent judgment, initiative, and understanding must be exercised in interpreting rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures in the maintenance of fire facilities, vehicles, and equipment.

Work is performed in accordance with established rules, regulations, and instructions. The employee monitors and checks work during repair or tests conditions after work is completed. This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment background check and random drug screens.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Supervision and Management. Plans, sets priorities, organizes, and directs the activities of the Fire Maintenance Division.
  • Oversees, organizes, and directs daily operations performing administrative duties, overseeing programs, projects, and personnel.
  • Plans, schedules, assigns, and reviews work of the assigned employees.
  • Generates work schedule.
  • Maintains daily time, personnel, sick and annual leave, and grievance records.
  • Evaluates personnel performance and takes necessary action to eliminate substandard performance.
  • Approves sick and annual leave; controls overtime.
  • Prepares performance appraisals on assigned staff.
  • Participates in new hire interviews for the Department.
  • Counsels employees and administers disciplinary action as required.
  • Schedules continuing education courses for fire department personnel.
  • Conducts training for new employees in the correct procedures of the fire maintenance division.
  • Conducts periodic safety briefings for assigned personnel.
  • Prepares annual fire department budget item submission for the Public Works budget.
  • Monitors current budget to stay within limits.
  • Ensures all expenditures are authorized by approved budget.
  • Evaluates future needs and capital expenditures to support efficient operations.
  • Researches, prepares, and applies for grants relating to fire department operations.
  • Performs public relations in meeting with citizens to answer questions and complaints.
  • Maintains accurate records of all maintenance work performed on the facilities, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Oversees and works with outside contractors working on fire facilities, apparatus, and equipment.
  • Ensures assigned personnel perform duties and responsibilities in a safe and prudent manner which does not expose them or others to unnecessary harm or risk of on-the-job injury.
  • Ensures fire reports are submitted monthly in the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS).
  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:
    Fire Department Facility and Equipment Management. Supervises and oversees personnel in the inspection and maintenance of fire apparatus, facilities, and equipment.
  • Oversees and ensures all testing and maintenance is performed and documented according NFPA and ISO standards and requirements.
  • Develops apparatus maintenance and repair programs.
  • Inspects equipment and facilities to determine repair or malfunctioning units and physical structures.
  • Contracts with outside vendors to perform repairs that are outside the scope or available time of the fire department technicians.
  • Identifies and maintains an inventory of parts, supplies, tools, and equipment necessary to perform repairs and maintenance.
  • Coordinates maintenance and repairs on fire tools and equipment.
  • Ensures all maintenance records are completed and filed.
