The Shipping and Receiving Clerk plays a critical role in managing the flow of goods into and out of a company's warehouse or distribution center. This position ensures that all incoming shipments are accurately received, inspected, and documented, while outgoing shipments are properly prepared, labeled, and dispatched in a timely manner. The clerk collaborates closely with inventory control, warehouse staff, and transportation providers to maintain efficient logistics operations.
Attention to detail and organizational skills are essential to prevent errors and discrepancies in shipment records. Ultimately, this role supports the company's supply chain by facilitating smooth and accurate movement of products, contributing to overall customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic computer skills, including familiarity with inventory management software and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to lift and move packages up to 50 pounds safely.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Effective communication skills to interact with team members and external partners.
- Previous experience in a shipping and receiving or warehouse environment.
- Knowledge of shipping regulations and documentation requirements.
- Forklift certification or experience operating warehouse equipment.
- Experience with barcode scanning systems and electronic data interchange (EDI).
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional overtime if needed.
- Receive, inspect, and verify incoming shipments against purchase orders and packing lists to ensure accuracy and quality.
- Prepare and package outgoing shipments, ensuring proper labeling and documentation for timely delivery.
- Maintain accurate records of all shipping and receiving activities, including data entry into inventory management systems.
- Coordinate with warehouse personnel to organize storage and retrieval of goods, optimizing space and accessibility.
- Communicate with carriers and freight companies to schedule pickups and deliveries, resolving any shipping issues or delays.
- Conduct regular inventory counts and report discrepancies to management for resolution.
- Ensure compliance with company policies and safety regulations during all shipping and receiving processes.
The required skills such as attention to detail and organizational abilities are essential for accurately processing shipments and maintaining precise records, which helps prevent costly errors. Computer literacy enables the clerk to efficiently use inventory management systems and communicate via email or other digital platforms. Strong communication skills facilitate effective coordination with warehouse staff, carriers, and suppliers to ensure smooth logistics operations.
