Building Official

Salary Range: Grade 12 $ 70,679 - $98,490

The Town of Madison is seeking a Building Official for the Building Department. The role involves planning, directing, and managing building inspection operations, ensuring compliance with State building codes and related ordinances, and providing technical consultation to Town agencies and the public.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Plan, direct, and manage operations of the Building Inspection Department.
  • Assist in the annual preparation of the department budget.
  • Conduct inspection, investigative, enforcement and administrative duties to assure compliance with State Building codes and related regulations.
  • Enforce related ordinances and State statutes for the Town.
  • Review planning and zoning applications for building projects.
  • Review and approve building permit applications, building plans, construction documents and specifications.
  • Provide technical consultation, assistance and support to Town agencies, departments, contractors, architects, engineers, and the public.
  • Make field inspections of fire‑damaged and potentially hazardous buildings and structures; issue orders of unsafe conditions and take appropriate follow‑up action; assist the Fire Marshal in investigations when requested.
  • Be available for emergency inspections and consultations.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned or required.
Minimum Training and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Seven years of progressively responsible construction/building inspection experience, including supervisory experience.
  • State of CT Building Official certification pursuant to CT General Statutes 29‑261 and 29‑262.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of a complex background investigation.
Work Schedule

Monday – Thursday 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Friday 8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
