GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE FUNCTION Coordinates and performs the cataloging of all library materials, both print and electronic. Works to ensure the library system is properly configured to support acquisition, cataloging, serials, inter‑library loan, and other technical processes of the library. Education and/Or Experience

This position requires a Master’s degree from an ALA‑accredited school. Unofficial transcripts must be submitted with resume and official transcripts submitted upon hire. Also requires demonstrated experience cataloging in an Integrated Library System (ILS) such as SIRSI and with the Resource Description & Access (RDA) and Machine‑Readable Cataloging (MARC) components of OCLC. Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to initiate and maintain effective working relationships.

Knowledge of library and standard office software programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide original and copy bibliographic cataloging to library materials that conforms to national standards as specified by RDA and Library of Congress (LC) classification, making effective use of cataloging tools such as OCLC Connexion, MARC Edit, Cataloging Distribution Service (CDS) Classification Web and Sirsi Dynix Workflows.
  • Classify using the LC classification or other mandated systems and construct call numbers for materials added to the library’s collections.
  • Assign metadata for digitized materials adhering to best practice and national standards for digital collections.
  • Perform cataloging and maintenance for serial materials in print, microform and electronic formats, including creating and maintaining serial control records in the ILS. Work with administrative branch librarians and their staff to ensure serial holdings are current for all library locations.
  • Ensure that authority records are properly assigned and maintained. When needed, responsible for running system reports to identify unauthorized headings in the online catalog in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for creation of and updating of written policies and best practices for the Hinds Libraries related to cataloging.
  • Obtain and maintain MARC records for resources.
  • Assist with materials processing for the libraries as needed including unpacking items received, repackaging, barcoding items, pricing items and wrapping dust jackets and covers.
  • Keep informed in current developments in the areas of cataloging and management of electronic resources.
  • Perform necessary cataloging tasks for library withdrawal, weeding and material relocation projects.
  • Assist with hardware and software installation and maintenance.
  • Assist in budget control in areas of responsibilities.
  • Assist in preparing statistical and other reports and analyses.
  • Assist with collection development and acquisition duties as assigned.
  • Assist in the training of new library employees, student assistants, and library technical assistants.
  • Actively participate in library and campus committees as assigned.
  • Ensure professional growth by attending PDI courses, workshops, conferences particularly those related to library technical services.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the appropriate authority, including assisting other branch or campus libraries.
  • Maintain knowledge of diversity‑related issues, legislation, and best practices.
