Position Function

The College of Veterinary Medicine, Mississippi State University, invites applications for an assistant/associate/full clinical professor in aquatic diagnostics and research. This position is located at the Aquatic Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (ARDL), housed at the Thad Cochran National Warmwater Aquaculture Center in Stoneville, Mississippi. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting‑edge research in the field of aquatic animal medicine and aquaculture production.

Situated in the heart of the Mississippi catfish industry, the ARDL plays a pivotal role in providing essential veterinary services, including diagnostics, preventive medicine, and disease management for catfish and other aquaculture producers in Mississippi and surrounding states.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for aquatic diagnostics and field work, specifically on‑farm problem solving. This position will allocate approximately 75% FTE to diagnostic service activities (clinical diagnostics and on‑farm investigations) and the remainder to collaborative scholarship and teaching. Mississippi produces more than 65% of the nation’s farm‑raised catfish and each year the ARDL receives approximately 750 necropsy/water accessions, with 98% originating from commercial catfish farms.

The successful candidate will actively collaborate with fellow CVM faculty as well as Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES) and USDA researchers conducting investigations in support of catfish aquaculture. The successful candidate will also contribute to teaching on an invited basis. This is an excellent opportunity to join an institution renowned for its contributions to aquatic animal medicine and the Mississippi catfish industry, recently ranked the top university worldwide in aquaculture research by ScholarGPS.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a DVM (or equivalent degree) from an accredited institution. Attainment of a regular licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Mississippi is required, as is maintenance of category II veterinary accreditation.

Rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, either in academia or clinical practice.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in aquatic animal medicine, fish health or similar fields, preferably in the context of commercial aquaculture. Those with demonstrated experience in aquatic diagnostics, including recent graduates with training in aquatic animal medicine, are encouraged to apply.

Advanced degrees beyond the DVM (or equivalent), and/or board certification in a relevant specialty are desirable, but not necessary.
