SVA is looking for a Senior Accountant to join our Non‑Profit team in Madison, WI. This role focuses on audits, reviews, compilations, and related engagements for nonprofit organizations, with a mix of client work and professional development.
Responsibilities- Work with an in‑charge to complete assigned audits, reviews, compilations, and agreed‑upon procedures engagements for nonprofit organizations. When challenging situations arise, propose alternative options and agree on a course of action.
- Act as in‑charge for assigned engagements, including client interaction and budget preparation.
- Prepare financial statements.
- Prepare moderate to difficult income tax and informational returns, including organizing supporting documentation.
- Perform tax, audit, or other research to gain expertise in a service line.
- Manage assigned administrative and other client‑related tasks.
- Participate in internal and external meetings appropriately.
- Maintain confidentiality with client information in accordance with related laws and regulations and adhere to all SVA policies and procedures.
- Ensure all duties are performed efficiently and to a satisfactory level, typically requiring 55 hours per week during busy season (including weekends) and 40–45 hours per week during non‑busy season.
- Prepare or assist with Uniform Guidance audits and related compliance testing, where applicable.
- All other duties as assigned.
- Assist clients with bookkeeping (monthly, quarterly, and annually).
- Post adjustments to the working trial balance.
- Record transactions in journals, classify postings, total and cross‑total entries for a period.
- Draft financial reports, including required footnote disclosures.
- Create and maintain property and equipment records and calculate depreciation and amortization.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or a related field.
- 1 to 3 years of experience as a staff accountant in a public accounting firm or equivalent work experience, preferably serving nonprofit organizations.
- Pursuing CPA Examination preferred; if appropriate, pursuing EA Examination required.
- Knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, familiarity with Uniform Guidance, exempt organization taxation, and nonprofit financial reporting preferred.
