A well-established and growing heavy civil construction contractor in the Madison, Wisconsin area is seeking an experienced Senior Job Cost Accountant to join its team. The company delivers a diverse portfolio of commercial, municipal, infrastructure, and residential construction projects, providing long-term stability and opportunities for professional growth.
Position SummaryThe Senior Job Cost Accountant will be responsible for the financial management of multiple construction projects, including job setup, cost tracking, subcontract administration, material inventory, and invoice verification. This position works closely with Project Managers to ensure accurate financial reporting, billing, and cost control throughout the project lifecycle.
The ideal candidate will have strong construction accounting experience, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to identify opportunities to improve project profitability.
Key Responsibilities- Set up new projects and manage pay applications.
- Administer subcontract and material invoicing.
- Maintain project material inventory and job cost records.
- Review and approve invoices while ensuring accurate Accounts Receivable tracking.
- Issue purchase orders and support project procurement activities.
- Partner with Project Managers to deliver timely and accurate financial reporting.
- Complete month-end job cost accounting and reconciliations.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors and suppliers.
- Perform cost analysis and identify opportunities to improve project profitability and efficiency.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Previous experience in construction job cost accounting is required.
- CMA or CCEA certification is preferred but not required.
- Strong understanding of construction accounting principles and project costing.
- Experience working alongside Project Managers and field operations.
- Excellent analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
- Highly detail-oriented with exceptional accuracy.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with Sage/Timberline accounting software is preferred.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
