Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Department Administrator and Department Chair, and working closely with the Vice Chairs, Associate Administrator and other team members within the department, the Communications Manager is responsible for communications for the SMPH, Department of Anesthesiology (DOA), with special emphasis on internal and external communications in the strategic areas including but not limited to clinical, education and research programs.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, coordinating, writing and editing publications, external correspondences, e-newsletters, e-mail communications, reports, executive communications, Web-based education content, Web and intranet content, and social media content. The position works collaboratively with the School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) Dean's office and members of UW Health including such areas as media relations, community relations, marketing and communications, and regional development.

The incumbent will be a leader in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of a service-oriented culture within the DOA.

This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Manage the day-to-day operational unit plans to align with strategic initiatives and to meet established objectives
  • Plan, write, and edit content for various internal and external stakeholders
  • Plan and direct unit programs and/or projects to ensure adherence to deadlines and budgets
  • Identify, propose, and implement new or revised unit operational policies and procedures
  • Develop, implement, and deliver communication materials through various mediums to designated audiences

Compensation

The starting salary for the position is $79,520; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications
  • Three years of progressive professional experience in marketing and/or communications in a professional setting
  • Extensive knowledge of social media platforms and management tools
  • Extensive knowledge of web technology and web content management systems
  • Graphic design principles and software knowledge
  • Demonstrated team skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups
  • Experience providing staff support and/or supervisory support within a multidisciplinary team
Preferred Qualifications
  • Medical/science writing experience
  • Familiarity with photography and video technology
  • Demonstrated project management skills in a deadline-driven environment
  • Experience coordinating multiple internal and external communication channels and projects
  • Experience in an academic medicine setting
  • Community outreach, event planning, and development experience
Education

Bachelor’s Degree preferred
