interested in learning more about a career in public works with the city of madison while getting paid? Apply to participate in the madison infrastructure training – engineering (mi-te) program where you will be provided classroom and hands‑on training in sanitary and storm sewer cleaning, closed‑circuit television (cctv) inspection, utility casting adjustments and replacements, storm inlet repairs, concrete flatwork, and asphalt patching.
You’ll learn how the city’s infrastructure is constructed and maintained, related equipment operation, and construction safety. You will also receive classroom and behind the wheel training to get your commercial driver’s license (cdl). Program participants who successfully complete the program will be considered for permanent entry level positions in the engineering, parks, and streets divisions.
hours: 7:30 am – 3:30 pm, monday through friday, approximately april through november
this is a 6-8 month training program intended to prepare participants for a career in public works with the city of madison. Participants will be provided classroom and hands‑on training in concrete, asphalt and utility casting construction. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a lead worker 1.

the hourly wage consists of a base wage of $18.57 per hour plus a $2.50/hour bonus.

- job site safety – safety first! Start applying what you’ve learned in the classroom and work to set up and maintain a safe job site, review utility markings, and keep yourself safe while working around traffic and heavy equipment on a construction site.
- equipment safety and operation – gain hands‑on experience in the safe operation of equipment used to perform work. Examples of skills you will learn:
- back up safely, identify and avoid blind spots, and use a spotter
- use a skid‑steer to load materials into a dump truck and break out and remove existing concrete or asphalt
- transport and dump materials
- compact asphalt with a ride‑on roller
- compact base materials with a plate compactor
- cut concrete with a partner saw
- safely load and secure equipment on a trailer
- concrete construction – work on a crew to learn how to replace and install sidewalks, driveway aprons, curb and gutter, and bus stops. You’ll gain hands‑on experience on laying out a job, breaking out and removing existing concrete, excavating and back‑filling to necessary grade, base compaction, forming and pouring concrete, finishing, and applying curing compound.
- asphalt construction – work on a crew to learn how to install asphalt pavement patches. In addition to what you’ve already learned you’ll gain hands‑on experience on placing and compacting asphalt.
- utility casting replacements – finally you’ll learn about the different types of utility castings and how we use mr. Manhole to cut around the casting and surrounding pavement out all ’ll then learn how to set and seal a new casting and patch the surrounding area.
- sewer cleaning – work on a actor crew using high‑tech equipment to clean and maintain the city’s sanitary and storm sewer to prevent back‑ups, overflows, and flooding.
- cctv inspection – assist on one of our cctv inspection crews using high‑tech robotic equipment to inspect internal pipe conditions.
