Purposeof Position
The purpose of the special education teacher is to ensure that each child with a disability is provided a free appropriate education. Each student’s programming clearly identifies the special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs and prepare them for further education, employment and independent living. MMSD has a commitment to providing special education and related services accessible within inclusive educational environments to the extent possible.
To accelerate the learning of our students with disabilities and meet their unique needs, special education and related services are provided throughout an array of educational environments (e.g., integrated/general education, community‑based, special education and home‑based) thus providing the richest possible experience.
- Provide specially designed instruction through evidence‑based interventions. Provide curricular/instructional accommodations and modifications to eligible students with disabilities. Work in an alternative educational environment resulting in meaningful educational benefit.
- Implement district policy/procedures and guidance provided by the Department of Student Services, Chief of Schools, Student Services Administrative Team, building administrator and program support teacher(s) regarding procedural/substantive compliance matters. Collaborate with building administration, Central Office staff, general/special education teachers, related services providers, and special education assistants (SEAs) to successfully design, implement, and progress monitor individualized education programs (IEPs) for each student with a disability.
- Design/co‑design accessible standards‑based learning opportunities. Teach using a variety of instructional methodologies and assess through multiple means. Adjust instruction or programming when necessary to accelerate the learning of students with a variety of disabilities (Autism, Emotional Behavioral Disability, Hearing Impairment, Intellectual Disability, Other Health Impairment, Orthopedic Impairment, Specific Learning Disability, Speech/Language Impairment, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Visual Impairment).
- Provide clear guidance, direction, feedback and instructions to special education assistants for the purpose of implementing students’ IEPs and increasing the learning outcomes of students. Engage in two‑way communication with families regarding student progress, program adjustments, and improved ways of working.
- Perform Case Management Duties:
- Develop a collaborative working relationship with families, colleagues and community members.
- Assess students’ academic, social‑emotional, behavioral, functional and pre‑vocational abilities.
- Collect and interpret progress monitoring data.
- Communicate with relevant staff/family to make adjustments to student education/programming as necessary.
