Elementary (4K-4th) SREC Program Leader – Summer 2026

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses.

As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides after school enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. After school clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!

Program

Description:

We are looking for dedicated and reliable staff to work in our school-based elementary summer recreation program, SREC (pronounced like Shrek the ogre). This job is for creative and caring people with lots of energy, patience, and a willingness to create engaging opportunities for all things “kid” – arts & crafts, sports, games, reading, and outdoor fun! Paid professional development and staff training are provided.

SREC Snapshot
  • The SREC program provides supervised indoor, outdoor and offsite programming during the afternoon portion (12-4pm) of the summer school day for MMSD students in grades 4K-4 (up to 200 students per site location)
  • Each classroom has 15-18 students supervised by two Program Leaders.
  • Program Leaders spend the majority of the time in the classroom or the playground actively supervising at all times.
  • Each site has a leadership team for support and guidance.
  • Buildings can be hot during the summer!
Job Description & Duties
  • Plan, prepare and lead daily activities for your classroom
  • Supervise large and small groups of students during outdoor recess and field trips
  • Create a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for all students
  • Work as a team with other program staff to carry out responsibilities
  • Maintain a clean and organized classroom that is shared with teachers in the morning
  • Help students work through conflict
  • Interact with parents as needed
  • Complete other duties as assigned
Mandatory Training Week: New staff only on Friday, June 12 from 10:30am-2:30pm, and then all staff Monday, June 15 – Thursday, June 18 on-site from 10:30am-4:30pm. There will be no training on Friday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth.
Program Dates: June 22-July 31, 2026 Holidays/No program (unpaid): Friday, June 19 and Friday, July 3.

Monday through Friday, 11:30am-4:30pm (see above for training week times)

Pay Rate

$16.00 – $17.40/hour

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must have completed at least one year of high school or older to be eligible
  • Prior experience working or volunteering with children
  • Ability to work Monday through Friday for the entirety of the program, including training week
  • Reliable transportation to job site
  • Dedicated to making a difference in your community
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with youth in a recreation or childcare setting
  • Classroom experience or college-level courses related to field
  • Experience with conflict resolution, NVCI, or other de-escalation strategies
  • Experience providing accommodations for individuals with disabilities
  • CPR and First Aid certification
  • Bilingual in Spanish or Hmong or other languages
