Job Description:

Disability Resource Services at Madison College is seeking a Sign Language Interpreter to provide professional interpreting services that support accessibility and effective communication for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

This position plays an important role in creating inclusive academic and campus environments by accurately interpreting classroom instruction, meetings, events and other college-related activities.

The Sign Language Interpreter role involves collaborating with faculty, staff and students to promote equitable access, coordinating captioning services as needed and supporting communication strategies that enhance the student experience. This position contributes to Madison College's commitment to student success, inclusion and compliance with accessibility standards.

Schedule:

This is a full-time, 34 hours per week, 52 weeks per year position. Monday - Friday, working hours will vary based on student need. This position is onsite, however, may accommodate hybrid schedule based upon student need. Hybrid schedule is subject to change in accordance with Madison College policy.

Provides professional interpreting services in classrooms, labs, and campus activities to ensure accessibility and effective communication for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Ensures accurate message conveyance by assessing speaker intent, vocabulary, tone, and register to determine appropriate language modes and interpretation strategies.

Supports prospective and enrolled students in accessing college services and programs by communicating through American Sign Language or other appropriate sign systems.

Delivers effective interpretation in academic and campus settings by facilitating expressive and receptive communication and preparing as needed for accuracy.

Enhances access and inclusion by supporting disability-related programs and outreach, including orientation programs, parent engagement, and partnerships with community organizations.

Ensures compliance and accessibility by coordinating closed captioning services, assisting faculty in locating accessible media, providing training on captioning resources, and maintaining records.

Contributes to an inclusive, equitable and supportive environment where everyone at the institution feels valued, respected and empowered to reach their full potential.

Performs other related duties such as student intake, student support tasks, administrative tasks, technology support and providing presentations, all within the scope of the position as required for the efficient operation of the division and to support institutional objectives.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of American Sign Language, sign systems and interpreting techniques.

Knowledge of disability services, accessibility laws and best practices for supporting students.

Skill in assessing speaker intent, tone and register to provide accurate interpretation.

Skill in coordinating closed captioning services and training faculty on accessibility resources.

Ability to provide expressive and receptive interpretation that maintains the integrity of the source message while adapting to diverse communication needs.

Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff and community partners to enhance accessibility and inclusion

Skill in engaging positively with all populations and communities, contributing to a safe and inclusive learning and work environment. Skill in effectively and respectfully communicating with others.
