Job Summary:The Research Animal Resource and Compliance (RARC) Training Program is looking for a driven, enthusiastic professional to join a collaborative team that teaches UW–Madison researchers and animal care staff how to work with research animals ethically, responsibly, and safely.
The Training Coordinator helps to develop, manage, and deliver the UW-Madison research animal training program. A successful candidate must demonstrate adaptability, proficiency, and patience in leading hands‑on training sessions for a wide range of species such as mice, rats, cattle, zebrafish, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, cats, dogs, sheep, swine, poultry, and Xenopus. The role also requires the ability to teach basic surgery techniques including anesthesia, aseptic technique, tissue handling, and wound closure.
Additional responsibilities include tracking and documentation of training and collaborating effectively with veterinary, research, and animal care staff to develop training materials.
Job Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and deliver faculty development and engagement programs and activities.
- Research and acquire learning resources, technologies, materials, and processes to support learning.
- Provide training and technical support directly to learners in settings such as classrooms, labs, clinics, and distance learning mediums.
- Offer consultation, training, and support for learning technology tools and platforms.
- Advise and support groups working on program‑level curricular design and development by facilitating the work and contributing expertise in adult learning theory, instructional design, and learning technology; may also contribute subject matter expertise.
- Analyze, test, troubleshoot, resolve issues, and provide feedback regarding learning technologies.
- Design, develop, organize, maintain, and consult on instructional materials, activities, curricula, and assessment resources in accordance with current pedagogical practices, cognitive/learning science, and design tools and methods.
- Collect, organize, interpret, and disseminate data to identify instructional program needs and enhance effectiveness.
- Design, develop, or recommend multimedia learning materials; facilitate communications with multimedia service providers to ensure instructional needs are met.

Compensation:The expected minimum starting salary for this position is $65,000 annually. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications. Required Qualifications:A minimum of 2 years of relevant hands‑on animal experience in a work or classroom setting, teaching and/or training experience, and comfort with public speaking are required. The Training Coordinator must communicate professionally and effectively.
Preferred Qualifications:Proficiency in animal handling, substance administration, and blood collection techniques for common laboratory and agricultural species; knowledge of the behavior, biology and husbandry of laboratory and agricultural animal species; surgical knowledge and experience in anesthesia, aseptic technique, tissue handling, wound closure; excellent computer skills; experience with online learning platforms and module creation; experience with a learning management system for documenting and tracking training;
ability to work in a highly collaborative and flexible team environment; and curriculum development or educational program management.
Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
