Job Summary

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin‑Madison seeks either a full‑ or part‑time instructional staff member with expertise in strategic communication. We seek a colleague who enjoys close collaboration with fellow instructors to help continue building one of the top strategic communications programs in the country. Known widely for our curriculum innovation and leading‑edge scholars and teachers, we are seeking a colleague who will bring industry experience, fresh ideas, and a commitment to learning outcomes.

Principal

Duties
  • Prepare and teach strategic communications courses; hold office hours; prepare, administer, and grade exams; prepare, assign, and grade coursework. Possible classes include:

    • JOURN 475: AI for Strategic Communication
  • Collaborate with faculty on curricular developments, including the development of new strategic communication courses and coursework.
  • Oversee and advise one of the school’s strategic communication‑related student organizations, such as Ad Club, Public Relations Student Society of America, Association for Women in Communications, Bucky PR, or Association for Women in Sports Media.
  • Participate in faculty governance by actively contributing on 1–2 departmental committees.
  • Contribute to external relations efforts with employers and alumni in strategic communication. Maintain contacts and assist with recruiting as needed. Advise students on professional development and employment.

    Job Responsibilities
    • Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading.
    • Presents evaluations of teaching methods and techniques to those in the institution and elsewhere.
    • Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy, and trains faculty and other instructional staff in use of said instructional techniques and programs.
    • Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements.
    • Designs curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction in courses within that discipline.
    • Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties.
    • May administer budget and personnel for instructional grants and programs.
    • Develops grant proposals for instructional development and may serve as principal or co‑principal investigator on grants to develop new teaching methods in the discipline.
    • Supervises the day‑to‑day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed.

    Compensation

    and Benefits

    Expected full‑time salary range: $80,000 – $90,000 for highly experienced candidates. Actual pay within this range will depend on experience and qualifications and will be prorated based on FTE. This position is a 9‑month appointment, with no teaching or service obligations in the summer months.
